TV Channel switching trouble
« on: April 22, 2016, 04:47:48 pm »

Hello - Having problems with Live TV since installing this version.  As far as I know things were fine before.  When I select Live TV it plays as normal but when I attempt to change channels i get the below error message.  The audio continues to play while this message is displayed.  When I select "OK" to dismiss the message the audio terminates and I am returned to the main Theater View screen.  I am also only seeing 2 channels in my EPG when i normally see about 25.  I repeated the basic TV setup but to no avail.  I use an OTA antenna and my tuner is a PCI-E based Hauppauge Win TV 418.

Any help is appreciated and please let me know if more information is needed.

TV Channel switching trouble
« Reply #2 on: April 22, 2016, 05:34:39 pm »

When I select Live TV it plays as normal but when I attempt to change channels i get the below error message.

No television tuner is available to fulfill your request.
Please make sure you have a device that is not in use.

How did you try changing the channel?  I mean, using a remote control, pressing number keys, or selecting a new program in Theater view or standard view?

Thanks for your reply:

I use a tablet based remote called "Touchsquid."  I see the channel displayed in JRiver but when I actually select it I get the error message.  I also use JRemote and tried selecting channels that way but got the same result.

Can you try just double-clicking a channel in the Channels list in standard view?  Just to narrow down the cause.

Also, are you playing on a client or a stand alone computer?

I tried that and it produces the same results.  I get the below message and then TV shut down.  I am using a standalone computer.

There are two things that are puzzling.  One is that you can start playing a channel alright, but just not able to switch.  The other is this:

Quote
I am also only seeing 2 channels in my EPG when i normally see about 25.

Do you mean you can only get two channels, or you get more channels but only two channels have EPG data?

Regardless, it may be caused by shifted antenna.  Try adjusting the antenna.

What if you roll back MC version to the one you had been using before you upgraded to the latest?

Problem solved -  Tools > Options > Television > Channels > Manage Channels

The 2 channels I have been seeing EPG data for were listed and assigned to my tuner.  The rest of the detected  channels we set to "do not assign."  Odd since every channel worked before installing the latest version.  In any case, all seems well.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hmm, I think the problem is still there, but you may have masked it, or found a workaround.

None of my channels have any tuner assigned. When no tuner is assigned, MC just uses the next available. It picks for itself, instead of using an "Assigned" tuner. That way when you are doing multiple recordings, or recording and watching live TV, MC can just switch to any tuner available.

So, either one of your tuners is having trouble and by assigning a tuner to channels you are avoiding using the bad tuner, or this version of MC is having trouble selecting a tuner with your specific hardware. Or maybe MC is having trouble getting the EPG data using one of your tuners. You didn't say which EPG source you use, but if it is the EPG data broadcast OTA on ASTC channels, that could explain why you only got two channels of EPG data.

I suspect that you will see more problems in future, and they may be hard to work out what is going on. Check your recording continue to work properly.

In general you do not need to assign a preferred tuner to any channel.  You do make an assignment when all of the following three conditions are met:

1. You have multiple tuners;
2. Some tuner or tuners are more sensitive than other tuners;
3. Certain channels need to use more sensitive tuners in order to get good video.

I found a bug in this.  It will be fixed in an upcoming build.
