FEATURE REQUEST: New DSD file format!
« on: October 03, 2015, 02:19:44 pm »

Dear JRiver,
I see you guys are implementing >700kHz playback. Wow.

But IMO there is something I think is much more beneficial and could really help the hi-res audio hobby as a whole... A better file format for DSD than .dff and .dsf.

I think it's a travesty that in 2015, with all the discussion about DSD64/128/256/512... that there still does not exist a file format that can handle BOTH detailed standardized tagging (ID3v2) and a decent compression scheme (eg. DST).

In my JRiver music library, I find it disturbing that I have both .dff and .dsf lying around... Some .dff's compressed as DST (which JRiver handles well), others uncompressed and only .dsf with tags. There is no free way to compress with DST as far as I am aware; furthermore the old Philips DST Encoder software does not handle higher DSD128+ samplerates.

Here's my suggestion:
A NEW DSD FILE FORMAT:
     - Freely available / open source
     - Compression with DST-like ability ~50%
     - Standard tagging - ID3v2 tags
     - The usual other stuff? CRC integrity check, gapless, etc...

JRiver would be an awesome flagship program for all of us serving the music. Allow easy database distinguishing of PCM and DSD libraries; including all the potential DSD128+...
Maybe Mans who did the recent DSD for SoX (https://github.com/mansr/sox) can implement this file format in SoX for conversion from .dff/.dsf?
Would be awesome if Mp3Tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) could help with the tagging!

Can't blame a guy for dreaming I hope :-).

Heck... While I'm dreaming, how about eventually having dBPowerAmp implement the codec for interconversion between DSD formats easily as well :-).

We're rather unlikely to pursue creating our own file format or even compression scheme. Getting something like this quite "right" is extremely hard, not to mention getting it adopted by anything else.
From our perspective, you can just use compressed dff files and store the metadata in MCs library....  :)

Technically that was before he joined JRiver, if I have my history right. ;)
It was first released in 2000, so its been a few years.

I was a college kid that wrote Monkey's Audio on the side.  It's sad what I do for fun.  But JRiver saw it, took me out to lunch, and threw a job offer at me.  The rest is history.

Yaobing and Matt worked out the JTR file format, which is an amazing technical accomplishment in my opinion.
