Is volume levelling broken with 96kHz files?
« on: October 31, 2015, 03:43:56 am »

Noticed that recent 96kHz imported files feel like they are playing back louder than 44.1kHz tracks with volume levelling engaged.

The NUGEN VisLM plugin seems to corroborate:

The LUFS should of course be around the -23 position, which is where it sits when volume levelling is working correctly.

Frustratingly I'm not seeing it on ALL 96kHz files... so I could dropbox a music file that exhibits this behavior, if needed.

A sample file that shows this problem would be nice. I'm not aware of any problems with higher sample rates.

I can't reproduce any problems. I get an integrated loudness of -23.1 LUFS when playing this file with volume leveling. It analyzed with a volume level of -14 LU.

Now that's interesting...

If I play the same file from outside of MC, eg direct from the dropbox, I also see -23 integrated LUFS.  But if I play the library file I get -19 integrated LUFS...

And if I do On Disc (External) to find the library file and then double click on the file to play it externally with MC I get -23.  But switching back to the library is -19...

So, did you import the file or just play externally??

What is different about the way external files are handled to library files??

I imported it and ran audio analysis on it to make sure it has all the values it needs for volume leveling.
External files may be lacking some audio analysis values (depending on whats in the tags), and therefor their behavior could be anything.

Re-analyzed the file, to double check: same results.

Based on your comment above, it suggests then there is perhaps a tag in my library, for this and other files, that is causing this...?

Should I perhaps dropbox my library for testing?
