McAfee Anti-virus issues...
« on: November 04, 2015, 07:51:59 am »

I just changed my AV program (from Qihoo 360 to McAfee.) McAfee is very common and considered one of the best AV out there and yet again, after an install, I try to analyse audio and I'm back to MC21.0.17 hanging.

Yes I will eventually resolve it by making exclusions in appdata, where my media is and where MC is located but why is MC so vulnerable to a bunch of Anti-Virus softwares out there???

If I compare it to foobar, winamp, itunes, Sage...None of them required me to make exclusions under no circumstances and besides...Creating exclusions is kind of against the whole purpose of having an AV in the first place...

Techies (like us) don't mind much about fiddling around with these tweaks and exclusions but a typical user would love to leave this alone and might go somewhere else just because of this...

My 2 Cents.

I added 4 file exclusions in McAfee Home Edition as per the snapshot attached and info taken from here:  http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Symantec_Endpoint_Protection

I didn't add any folder exclusions (as I'm not sure if it's possible or how to do it for real time analysis with McAfe Home edition...)

So far so good.

I just fail to understand why you expect JRiver to solve this kind of problem.  We didn't sell this steaming pile of ... software.   It's between you and your AV Maker to make it work as intended.

I can't remember having so many ridiculous support problems since people were learning what a back slash and a colon were in the ancient days of DOS.

About a year back, (Maybe more maybe less) a version of MC was pretty much unusable due to all kinds of issues with antivirus programs.  At the time I was using Windows Defender.

Then after a few MC upgrades bam!! Problem gone without changing anything on my side besides upgrading to a newer version of MC...Whose fault was it? Windows Defender or issues with MC?

I fail to understand because I'm not experiencing this kind of issues with any other softwares and I'm not being given and explanation...

It was the antivirus. I'm sorry if you don't believe that.

They look for a particular "signature" in a file.  We might make a minor change and an AV program might freeze in fear.  They are that .... indiscriminate.

The best thing you can do when you're encountering issues with an antivirus is by reporting false positives (and submitting samples) to the vendor in question.

Also excluding MC's files and commonly used locations will go a long way, if not fix the issue completely.

As I said earlier yes I did fix my issue.  And Jim If you say it's the AV's fault of course I will believe you.  You guys are the experts.

Then maybe a more up-to-date Wiki AND a sticky called "Antivirus Issues" listing the common AV softwares with people adding to the list might be a good idea...

I'll start doing this from now on..However why is it that nothing is being flagged by the AV when JRiver Hangs? Shouldn't there be a log somewhere letting us know what happens? either from MC or the AV?

It's also possible (and very likely) that the antivirus is actively scanning running processes which is the cause of the mentioned hangs/lag.

Yes, this is kinda my whole point... I'd love to better understand or put the finger on what causes the hang/crash... If the AV forbids MC to do something why am I not being made aware of it by the AV as it usually does or have some sort of log that will provide the info that I can refer to...

AND if we (we as in MC users) keep making exclusions for MC in the AntiVirus softwares..We're definitely not helping the root cause :)
Catch-22...  Ok... I'm taking my exclusions out of the AV and reporting to McAfee...Let's see what happens..In the hopes it will also help other users!

Have you asked these questions of the McAfee people?

Problems with AV programs are very specific.  I've used Microsoft Security Essentials on my personal PC for years with no conflicts with JRiver s/w.  (MSE is Defender plus other stuff.)

I left out the crucial word NO.

I took McAfee off my system several years ago. It can really slow down your system and I found that is was not very good at recognizing potential threats. Even if it is free, many would recommend getting rid of it. And, just deleting it does not remove everything. At least in the past, there was a special procedure on their website to fully remove everything. If you are just starting with it, I would recommend some other option. There are free options including Defender. I use Avast and Malwewarebytes. Some people like AVG.

I've been burned with Windows Defender in the past so not an option.. Yeah McAfee definitely seems to be slowing down one of my PCs...So I may go back to Qihoo360...

To completely remove McAfee you need to run their Product Removal Tool, otherwise pieces of it stick around.

Windows Defender generally works fine.
