I'm having trouble to get a customized view to work.

I create a new library view under images, view as category.

I insert a Command... type=Expression

The expression is:  [Filename (path)]

Expression to display:  no matter what I enter here, it changes nothing.  [Filename (path)] is always displayed.

Am I doing someething wrong here, or does Expression to Display just not work?  A forum search reveals that was a problem in pane views, but was supposedly fixed back in MC20.something

Any advice would be appreciated!

If I am understanding you correctly I think I have been here before.
In which case the answer is that "Expression to display" only works in pane view?
To alter the text displayed in Category view you need to edit the thumbnail text.
Click the dropdown in the tab for the relevant category view, select Thumbnails then Thumbnail Text...
You can enter your expression to display here.
