MC21 Icon keeps coming and going on the Dock
« on: December 01, 2015, 07:51:21 pm »

When I launch MC21 on my Mac, it keeps showing a 2nd MC icon on the dock...then it goes away...then it comes back...then away...etc, etc...it seems to go on forever.  This can't be normal...can it?

If you have an icon within your dock of MC somewhere left of the Trash and a second appears to the right of the Trash then disappears when you close MC the icon to the left is an icon for an older version. Just select and drag that icon above the dock until it disappears in a "cloud". When you open MC (the current version) and if you want it permanently on your dock them select it and drag it to a position left of the Teash icon (you should notice a small vertical line there also).

That second icon that shows up, bounces, and disappears is an MC helper process.  I don't know everything that triggers them, but I know several things:  Building (or rebuilding) thumbnails uses a helper.  Analyzing audio uses one.  There seem to be some things related to video that trigger them that I can't figure out.

If you have them coming and going a lot, it implies that something is running in the background.  Maybe thumbnail building.  Maybe audio analysis.  Go to Help > System info.  That will show you any background processes running.  It will also show you what percentage of thumbnails are built and audio analyzed.

These should stop by themselves when they are done.  You might try to leave MC open for some time while you're off doing other things, or sleeping, or something; just to give it a chance to finish what it's doing.

it's already permanently on the dock...both the permenant and the flashing one are to the left of the trash (before the 'break').

It did finally stop...maybe it was auto import or something...still seems weird.

I wonder if this could be hidden by the dev team as it seems to be confusing some people. Personally, I don't mind it.

^ At the moment, I wouldn't want it hidden.

I can't figure out exactly what triggers it, but I get a good number of these helpers "stuck". When that happens the beach ball spins and MC does not respond AT ALL.  I usually let these stuck helpers run for 10 seconds or so... occasionally for 30 seconds or more.  Once they are stuck, they are stuck and won't stop.  Which means MC is totally stuck too.

So I conveniently right click on the bouncing MC icon and force quit it.  This brings MC back to responding again and life goes on as usual.  If they never got stuck, I'd be fine.  But, for now, I actually use the fact that they show up.  :)
