JRiver Bit-exact or TPDF Dithernig ?
« on: November 29, 2015, 08:01:23 am »

Hello

I found 2 type of dithering in last MC version: JRiver Bit-exact and TPDF
What's the difference between them? And why disabling dithering is not recommended ?

Also I have not seen before Live playback latency settings. That is it?

thanks! but it's hard for my understanding :) I could not understand what kind of dithering will be better to listen to a bit-perfect audio.
Is it possible to explain here in simple words?

Dither should always be used and should not be turned off.   That's why there's no option to disable it in MC.  The difference between the two types is very, very subtle and can only be heard by some people.  Of those people that can hear it, they only hear it when turning the volume of MC down to just a few notches above the minimum value.  This is why most people don't care or hear the difference:  Because it only has an effect at the absolutely lowest volume settings in MC, which most people don't use.

In summary:  It probably doesn't matter unless you use MC without a preamp.  But try both if you want.  You probably won't hear any difference at all.

Doesn't the option to disable dither exist on the mac? It's there on windows and linux. The only reason I'm aware of to do that is if whatever is downstream is dithering (though even then double dither is not really an issue unless you have the right sort of ears)

Doh!  I stand corrected.  The option for no dithering *is* on the Mac version too.  Honestly, I thought it wasn't in any version of MC.  Definitely my mistake.  Sorry for the misinformation.  Thanks Matt for correcting me.
