1. Is that just to set it up??
2. Can you see the JRiver server on your network without the TV after set up??

1. This is to be able to access the app. You'll need to have the QNAP server connected to a monitor via HDMI to open the app, which I find quite unfortunate.
2. Since I can't run it, I can't set up the media network to be able to see it.
I gotta say, it's pretty disappointing to see this great app relegated to the "HD Station" rather than having it run as a regular app. It's extremely constricting especially for users like me who have their QNAP server on a shelf running headless far away from any possible monitor setup.

I'm in the same position as you. My HS-251 has never been connected to anything except an Ethernet cable, so this great app (I use JRiver on my work PC an really like it) is essentially useless on my QNAP.

I thought the plan was to use the NAS, connected via the HDMI cable, as a (JRiver) Media Center. So that's kind of what I expected. It is unfortunate that it can't be used headless to just function as a DLNA and/or Library Server.

FWIW - I've been using the HS-251 as a headless DLNA server for a year with Twonky, Minimserver and Logitech Media Server, and I've never connected an HDMI cable. I bought it because it has no fan and is very quiet. Its only JRiver, which is unfortunately a program that I really like, which has this issue.
