Strange Volume issue after MP3 conversion
« on: December 17, 2015, 03:14:41 am »

Hi,

At first I thought I was just going insane as I got older, but.. I have noticed some weird issues with the volume changing in some of my tracks.
I also thought maybe it was something to do with my iPod but that wasn't it either as I compared tracks on my PC as well.

So far it seems to be a very rare case (haven't listened for it extensively), where the volume will just decide to drop out at  X point in a given file.

I have one track where there appear to be multiple drop outs throughout the song  (and its possibly slowly going back up making it easier to detect the next drop-out)

I have another track where only a few seconds into the song, the volume drop is drastic enough that you can't mistake it.

In both cases,  the original files were imported FLAC outputs from audio emulation.  The only modifications made were a lowpass filter and volume normalization to -6dB.
Inside media center the only modifications were Tagging & Album art,  plus Analysis of the files.     Then they were converted out to mp3 for iPod.
The imported FLACs do not display the volume anomalies.   I am not applying DSP or other effects during transcoding or playback.

as an aside the FLACs are noticeably quieter when played back  (I thought FLAC supported ReplayGain?) vs the MP3s
