Crashes using Surface and Teac DAC
« on: December 20, 2015, 09:13:33 am »

I recently purchased the Teac UB-503 DAC and have was going to try to use my original Surface Pro running Windows 10 as the player. I purchased and activated JRiver on the orignal Pro and selected a DSD file and received an error that my devise didn't support it.  So I checked the settings and found where I could choose the Teac as the DAC but once I saved JRiver crashed and then my Surface also crashed and rebooted.

I didn't have the issue using the Oppo HD1 headphone amp/DAC on the same Surface Pro previously.  I just yesterday bought a Surface Pro 4 with i7 processor so I decided to try that.  I downloaded and activated JRiver on it, installed the Teac DAC driver, opened JRiver and went to the settings to select the Teac DAC but as soon as I change it and save the JRiver crashes and a few second later the Surface Pro crashes and reboots.

Any idea what is going on?  I can use the Teac Media Player no issue for DSD/DSF files but I can't seem to make JRiver work with the Teac on 2 machines and one if a completely refresh machine out of the box

The Microsoft Surface seems to have USB issues. It is flaky with some USB devices, and is quite particular about USB Hubs:

and a few second later the Surface Pro crashes and reboots.

If the computer itself crashes and reboots, then it cannot be "caused" by MC. It may be triggered by MC, but not caused by MC. If the PC bluescreens, kernel panics (on Linux or OSX), or reboots spontaneously it means the kernel of the OS crashed, and MC does not have that power. Only drivers or the OS components itself (or hardware faults) have that power.

I do connect it to a USB hub that also has a Ethernet connection.  I will try tomorrow to connect directly.  So far JRiver app is the only one that gives me an issue on either machine, I can play using the Teac Media Player or Spotify no issue connected with USB in the same configuration.  But JRiver crashes my machine as soon as I select the Teac ASIO USB Driver in the options

Those other applications may not (and Spotify almost certainly does not) use the full ASIO spec, and could behave differently. MC does everything it can to fully control your device and play at high quality.

I don't know anything about that particular DAC, though. It is possible that some settings change in MC could make it behave better. But, the central point remains:

If the computer itself is crashing and rebooting, then the issue is in:
* Windows
* Hardware
* Hardware drivers

It cannot be in a user-space application like MC. I've posted a good analogy about this before:

I read through it, thanks.  While I understand the explanation that JRiver can't be responsible for the Windows crashing, there still is an issue with JRiver as it is first to crash.  Windows crashes shortly after JRiver crashes.  My guess will be something about te Teac DAC driver is causing the issue.  I didn't have the problem when selecting the Oppo Dac driver that I was previously using.

I will check on one of our local tech forums if others have had this issue.  I know many of them are using JRiver and the Teac DAC is quite popular as well around here.  Using the Surface was only for proof of concept before looking to find a dedicated PC to use as a media server.  But I need to get it stable first before I go done that road.

A quick update, switched JRiver to Asus VivoMini UN62 PC instead of my Surface which is currently on Windows 8.1 but have the same behavior if trying to output DSD to the DAC.  Sometimes it would play but would come out quite choppy regardless if being a DSF file or FLAC file.  Neither the processor or memory were being pushed.  I tried turning off Upconvert on the Teac but that didn't change anything. If I tried a different Output mode, then usually JRiver crashed followed by the PC a few moments later.  When I open up JRiver is would give me a popup about not having been properly shut down and to reset ask me to reset some of the settings.

If I change the Output to None then everything seems to play fine for my few tests but I assume everything is being output as PCM?  So far I haven't had the time to really figure out the best settings and how to use it as I only get an hour ever day or two to work on it, try to play a few songs, reboot the PC a few times but will try to figure it out this weekend
