If you want to read about the setup, hardware, and client benchmark: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101763.msg709453#msg709453

I have 4 bedroom Tv's that will need a Client. Currently testing with a high power server on Gigabit network with network tuners (SD + Ceton, USA Comcast). The server machine works perfectly fine, but can't get these bugs out of the client:

1. When I go to play a tv show file or live tv, more than 50% of the time the audio will just be completely garbled and choppy while the video plays fine. Sometimes if I skip back/forward on the remote it will clear, other times it won't, no matter how many times I try skipping back or forward. Sometimes if I hit stop then play again, the audio will be correct. I have tried all different settings under audio and video but can't nail it down. Does anyone else have this issue? Is there a permanent fix? Is it related to hdmi and bitstreaming? or?

2. Live Tv works, but setting up a recording on the client does NOTHING at all. I can see it in the list of "to be recorded" on the Client but it NEVER starts recording. The recording time comes and passes, and the item is still in the "to be recorded" list on the Client, as if the time or date is wrong but it's not. Also it does not show up in the "to be recorded" list on the Server. At first I thought it might be due to not running tv guide setup on the Client, but I've now done that and it made no difference. Recordings work on the Server but have not checked whether they show up on the Client's TBR list (just looked, they do not). Do other people setup recordings on the Client and they work? What's the secret?

EDIT: SOLVED

Re: Client Issues: choppy/garbled audio & setting up a recording does nothing

Just tried "sync changes with library server" on the Client and it failed.
Enabled "authentication" and put in matching user/password.
Tried sync again on Client and it failed again...

There was a problem sending changes to the server:
Unknown error, please ensure server is running and your connection is available.

Restarted Client and Server, no change.
Can see network files on Client.
Verified access key is correct.

Performed a "disconnect from server" and re-added, now recording and sync issues are resolved. Going to keep an eye on the audio stutter/garble issues...

Suspect audio choppy/garble has something to do with buffering, or the lack of buffering on first playback.

The choppy/garble audio only seems to happens when first starting up live tv or show playback. Then when I stop, wait a few seconds and re-start playback, there is a "buffering" message on the bottom of the screen and the audio is good... When choppy/garble audio happens the buffering message does not appear.

Sorry I can't add anything to help, other than to say that I have a Server set up and 2 clients, and don't have any of those issues...

Are all you PC's connected at gig speeds?  are they hardwired, or wireless?  Do you have a dedicated switch, or is everything plugged into your router (in theory that shouldn't matter, but sometimes it does...weird I know).

All wired on existing network that's been running WMC with 4 extenders (ceton echos + xbox360) for 2 years:

Test Client miniPC - 100M lan
Server - Gigabit lan
16 port Gigabit switch
6 foot patch cords

I do not suspect network speed/error problem because it only garbles the audio (video is not affected). And it only happens when first opening live tv or tv show files. So, if it starts out playing "good" then it will not have any symptoms for the rest of the time watching. Also, straight file copying to/from Client/Server machine is 11 MB/s, which very normal for 100M lan.

1. I don't know. VideoClock? Turn off Bitstreaming? Use WASAPI Exclusive mode? What about the Prebuffering setting under Audio? Live Playback Latency?

2. Yep, it was your syncing not working that stopped the recordings set up on the Client from working. Do not set up the TV Guide on the Client. It must get all the Guide data from the Server. It will be overwritten by the first Sync when the Client connects to the Server anyway.

Looks like my $150 Client experiment is done. Cannot resolve the garbled audio problem. Unacceptable for every day use. Cannot walk up to a tv and have garbled audio more than 50% of the time, just won't fly in this house. Tried:

Audio:
Every possible Direct Sound / WASPI combo = no difference
Increase Buffer = no difference
Bitstream = garbled
DISABLE Bitstream = drop outs every 5 seconds
PreBuffering = no difference
Play From Memory = no difference
Live Playback Latency = no difference

Video:
DISABLE Hardware Acceleration = horrible
Vsync = no difference

Genaral Video Card DISABLE Wait For Sync = horrible
