Output To Two Seperate PLayback Devices Simultaneously
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:53:06 am »

Greetings
Currently all of my content (Music, Films, TV Shows, Live TV) play through my Yamaha RX-V3067 via HDMI (Connected to a GTX 980Ti).

This all works nicely and it Bit-Streams BluRay content in DTS-HD MA and DD TrueHD without issue whilst playing my FLAC collection in Stereo as desired.

My system is located in the Lounge but my wife would like to be able to also listen to music that is playing in the Kitchen which is in the next room.

My thought was to use a Bluetooth 4.0 transmitter to the Green 3.5mm Headphone/Speaker out (on the on-board Realtek HD Audio Device) and connect one of these to it:

http://audiopro.com/products/addon-t3

I know that by default Windows will not allow you to transmit the sound to two separate Audio devices without a lot of messing about (Realtek Stereo Mix) but will JRiver allow me to do this?

I have had a look at the Forums and tried the Zone settings but these seem more geared to setting up different Audio modes based on the content.

My Amp has a "Zone-2" option as well which allows you to transmit to another amp however since this second connection would need to be Analog (i.e. the PC would need to be connected by both HDMI and Analog) I still need to overcome the same issue.

Obviously I don't want to mess with the HDMI settings but also send the Sound in Stereo in some way.

Is it possible for JRiver to output to two different audio devices?

Any suggestions are welcome.

With Audio you can just link two zones, and whatever you play will then play over the output devices of both zones. So yes, it can be done. Note that this won't work with Video content right now, but it doesn't sound like thats a goal for you.
Many people "ab"use zones for different settings, but their original design was for actual playback zones, with a feature to link the two zones so that they play the same content.

See here for some initial guidance:

Linked zones work.  But they won't keep the music in sync.  If you might be somewhere where you can hear both at once, this would sound really weird.  If not, then you're probably ok.

Another way to do it is to run your transmitter from a TAPE OUTPUT on your receiver.  That should work, and keep everything in sync.  My only question would be if bluetooth would reliably reach as far as you want to transmit.

But they won't keep the music in sync.

For whatever it's worth I use linked zones all the time at home and the sync is perfect.

It's what plays music to my living room and kitchen at the same time.

I use the same soundcard for both zones so that way I don't have to monkey with the rate of playback (since it's perfect).

The OP wants to use separate sound cards.  As I understand it, those won't maintain sync.  I can't remember the results of my last tests on this.  I do remember that testing with a sound card and a DLNA zone, the sync was off and could not be reliably adjusted.

Well the playback rate of each device can now be configured.  So it might take a little work, but you should be able to get perfect results.

Yes, I've adjusted both the playback rate and the delay using the zonelink audio adjust dialog.  Again, I can't remember what happened with two sound cards.  I was unable to get a reliable adjustment with one sound card and one DLNA device.

I should test two soundcards again and see what happens.

Thanks for this.

I managed to test this last night and got it working by using the On-Board Audio (Green Headphone Jack) and the HDMI simultaneously by linking the zones but the zones were out of sync as suggested. I played with the delays but didn't have time to sort it out properly.

It also hit me that since when you plug something into the Headphone jack Windows disables all other outputs by default - I would need to unplug the device whenever I'm not using J-river to Game etc..

I have heard that the analogue Tape out on the Amp may be a good solution as well but have not tested this yet.

I am actually thinking one of these may do the trick:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H8T1DJ8?ref_=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t

It appears to pass-through the HDMI while also splitting the Audio into various other formats. I have asked the manufacturer whether the HDMI out is "untouched" as I still want to Bitstream films. If that's the case then I may be able to connect it to the main HDMI Out on the Amp then all my HDMI Sources can be heard in the other room.

I have a Bluetooth 4 Transmitter which promises 10m. I need about 8m so I think it'll be fine!

Thanks Again.

Linking a zone on my HTPC to a zone on a client PC doesn't work successfully for me. Sync timing between the two zones changes track by track, so timing adjustments don't help.
