An m3u is basically just a text file of filenames.  And that's already available on File > Export Playlist.

I'm using MC21.0.31 for Mac and under File > Export Playlist I have an option for "text file (CSV Delimited)".  Is that option not in the Windows version?

Have you tried Text file (CSV Delimited) ?  That's a "delimited text file" just like you were asking for.

As somebody said, try CSV.

If that's not right, could you describe in detail what you're looking for?

Thanks.

thanks matt

as an example pink floyd "wish you were here" appears like this:
||1|Shine on You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V|13:30|
||2|Welcome to the Machine|7:26|
||3|Have a Cigar|5:08|
||4|Wish You Were Here|5:40|
||5|Shine on You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX|12:22|

nothing else gives output in that format

Are you saying that's the format of data you're looking for? Why?  And what's it called?

Thanks.

That looks like "pipe delimited", which uses the vertical bar (pipe) character to separate fields.  The vertical bar character is the one above the backslash on my keyboard.  This one:  |

I suppose pipe delimited might be useful for songs, artists, albums, etc that have commas embedded in them.  Because then a CSV file (comma separated) would be incorrectly delimited unless the software exporting *and* importing understands how to escape embedded commas.  For example a song name called, "The good, the bad, and the ugly".

Itunes seems to get around this by using the Tab character as a delimiter.  It's probably far less likely for a song, album, or artist to have a tab in their text.  Pipe characters seem equally unlikely to be in the actual fields being exported.

CSV has its ways to quote strings with commas or newlines in them to avoid any such problems.
Its quite simple really, strings with commas (or double quotes, or line breaks) in them must be quoted, and existing double quotes get replaced by two double quotes.

That way, it doesn't matter what separator character you use, could be space, could be comma, could be pipe, if you follow the rules its never a problem.

^ You're right of course, which is why I said that the export and import software had to know how to escape the delimiter character.

But, importantly, I had not tested a comma delimited export from MC.  So I did a couple of tests and MC is able to escape or quote both commas and double quotes.  The resulting CSV file imports cleanly into Open Office, and retains the commas and double quotes where they are supposed to be.  So, if your import software (in this case Open Office) is aware of the escaping (quoting), it can do a totally clean import from MC's output.  Nice!

I'm not sure what the OP's application for this is, but it certainly works in my limited testing.

adding tracklist to

https://rateyourmusic.com/

the format i have shown on my example is exactly how it is required
nothing else does the job- trust me on that!!

i was horrified when it was taken away and i now run media center 15.0.174 in tandem (a pain you know where) which has that option

So this from your example:
||5|Shine on You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX|12:22|

Is it:
||[Track #]|[Name]|[Duration]|

Should it sometimes fill the first empty || area?

And what would that output style be called?

And what would we call that output mode?

I mean what name would we show in the export dialog?

Thanks.

I just tried File > Export Playlist in MC15 and the dialog it shows is basically identical to the current version.

There's no "Panes" choice.

Quote

Two things:

1.  The title "panes.txt" just comes from the view he is using prior to export.  If you are in Playing Now, it will name the file Playing Now.txt .
2.  I can't find any documentation about how to export data to rateyourmusic at all.  Their help section seems to have no information at all on how to upload and maintain your collection.

Finally, as I said before, this format is commonly referred to as "pipe delimited".  It's generally an option when exporting a delimited file:  For example, some export functions allow you to choose your delimiter:  comma, tab, pipe, etc.

Assuming windows?

Control panel>Regions and language>formats>additional settings
Change the list delimiter from , to |
In MC export as CSV
Enjoy your pipe delimited files
(Afaik if you have a csv, open it and save as a txt, it asks you what delimiter to use...but my PC is at work I can't check)

Or, save as a normal csv
Open in notepad
Find and replace , with |
Will work unless there is a comma in the name, and the usual notepad quirks

I'm certainly not against being able to choose a delimiter but csv must be comma by default

i just made a .csv of some files
i opened the .csv with notepad
i did a find replace , with |

i get this

|1||To War!|5:35|

it's not flawless (the double vs. single pipe?) but i would think workable?
just trying to help with a workaround...

I am having trouble getting the export menu to allow any "text" saving options. When I select the text options, the file name goes light grey and I am unable to save it . HTML format and all others work fine, but no text  only optionss??? strange. Any thoughts here?

Maybe the path you have entered in the box isn't accessible?  Try entering something simple like C:\Test\
