Need a New Way to Reset Settings Because of Upgrade Changes
« on: January 17, 2016, 05:50:08 pm »

It dawned on me tonight writing this response that we no longer have a "clean" way to clear all user settings if we have (and want to keep) any older versions of Media Center kicking around.

This wasn't a problem previously because you could Uninstall and choose to nuke Registry Settings, and then reinstall and you'd get a "clean copy".  But now, when you reinstall, won't it pick up settings from older versions again like it did with that first upgrade?

So users no longer have any easy way to go "back to default" for troubleshooting purposes. That's no good, but I don't think going back to the "old way" is the solution. We just some way to clear all of the settings back to default without having to also uninstall old legacy versions to keep them from getting "upgraded".

That shouldn't be a big deal to implement, just a button that nukes the registry keys and relaunches MC, like when you restore a Library Backup (just makes them defaults). I'm not picky on where to put it, but for my money, I'd put it on the Clear Library command in the Library Manager as an optional checkbox in the existing "Are you sure?" confirmation message box.

I don't have an opinion (for once), just thought I'd say "Hi".

Hi!

For the record, if I'm wrong and there is some way to do it, please let me know. I can't figure it out, and have tried a few different things.

You can just erase this registry key by hand:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\J. River\Media Center 21

Right. But if I'm trying to help someone who is... Let's just say novice-level, do I tell them to do this? That's terrifying.

Before you could say to uninstall and check the Remove Registry Settings button. But now that doesn't work because on re-install, it'll pick up (possibly broken) settings from their older installs.
