Negative elapsed time?
« on: August 25, 2003, 06:25:29 pm »

Can someone explain to me why about 5-7 seconds before the current song ends, the elapsed time indicator starts counting backwards from say -0:05 or so to 0:00 and then starts counting up as the next track starts?

At first, I figured this must have something to do with buffering/crossfading, but as far as I know, I have all that turned off & set to "standard," yet this behavior still persists.  I really don't like hearing the last few seconds of song, but seeing it counting backwards before it's even ended...

I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this for me!

Thanks,
Brent

I noticed the same thing with some of my files
For example, if a song is 4:30 long, it gets to 4:25 then goes to -0:05 and on... The properties show it with a duration of 4:30.
There seems to be no common factor.
Some CD's do this but I checked one of my ripped files with the original on CD. The CD version is not a backward counter but the ripped .ape is.
If you play the song without it's next consecutive track, it just ends abruptly.
Also, just for fun, I tried converting one to an MP3 and it still cuts off.
I am running 9.0.180.
Is there a fix?

It's normal.  To support MC's advanced playback features (like true gapless, cross-fading, etc.) it must advance to the next track a little early.

Hopefully not too big of a deal.

Thanks for verifying that I'm not crazy!  ;)  I find this happens consistently, playing both from the original CD and from a ripped .ape file of the same song, so I haven't gotten the impression that it's format-specific.

This behavior appears even worse in the MusicLobby product (and might well do this in some MC9 mode that I haven't yet played with), because the album cover switches to the next one as soon as the elapsed counter goes "negative."  So you see the next album cover, you see a negative countdown, but you're still listening to the last few seconds of the current songs.  It's pretty ugly.

Hopefully the MC9 guys will read this and fix it up at the source.  Otherwise, at least for MusicLobby users, they'll look into some hack to trap the ugliness and hide it from view...

Just posted there before seeing this...

Any idea how I am getting negative numbers as big as in the hour or more ??

This is on 2 - 4 hour MP3 DJ sets encoded as one file...
