Problems with Chord Qutest hi-res files (MC23, Windows 7)
« on: February 09, 2019, 04:06:06 am »

I have just bought a Chord Qutest, but I am having some problems with playing Hi-Res files through JRiver (MC23 on Windows 7). The Qutest is supposed to be happy with files (over USB) up to 768.

I've been playing with a 352.8 file, but

- if I try to play through DirectSound then JRiver tells me that this will not work and offers to put the resolution down to 176.4

- if I play through WASAPI or ASIO then I get no errors, but the "resolution light" on the Qutest indicates that it's still playing only at 176.4

[I don't know if it's related, but in the "Playback device" properties of the Qutest in Windows I can only choose output resolutions up to 96.]

If anybody has any ideas I would be very grateful. (At the moment this isn't really relevant for actually listening to anything, other than this one file - but having shelled out on a Qutest I would like to be able to get it to work to its full capacity!)

Thanks,
James

You could try bitstreaming in audio settings.

You need to install the Qutest's drivers to get anything past 96 kHz on Windows 7 because Windows 7 doesn't have support for USB Audio Class 2.0 (hence the need for drivers). Windows 10 on the other hand doesn't actually need drivers since it natively supports USB Audio Class 2.0.

Open DSP Studio > Output Format and make sure the sample rates outputs listed aren't set to another sample rate.

Thanks, JimH.

I have been playing around a little more. It seems that JRiver is outputting at 352.8 (I have an Audiolab 8300CD as well, which - much more helpfully - gives a numerical figure for the resolution on the display, rather than the Qutest's "guess the colour" game); the Qutest is in fact picking this up (via ASIO) and dealing with the HiRes signal, although it's lighting up as 384 (as far as I can tell) rather than 352.8. But it seems like all is well after all.

Awesome Donkey - thanks too. I had installed the Qutest drivers, and it seems that ASIO is working for me. Even with the drivers, Windows only allows me to set a resolution up to 96KHz in the "Playback Devices"/"Supported formats" tag. Is that the Windows 7 issue showing itself?

Cheers,
James

On the Chord website the driver is named "Windows-10-768KHz-driver". Is the driver only supported on Win 10?

Do you have the 32 bit version of MC?

If it is a 64 bit only driver you must have the 64 bit version of MC and then also Win 10. You should ask the Chord team about that to verify these.

It seems to be compatible with Windows 7. I'm using 64 bit MC, and they do seem to be talking to each other properly.
