Confession....
« on: August 21, 2003, 05:18:43 pm »

I'm starting to like and use the panes....

(must be honest)

It's like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I've been cloned to something else with different values....

Is that an evil cackle I hear coming from the JRiver offices?

Or maybe it's just me... ;)

You'll just have to wonder if you are the only one that hears it....

My guess is that the panes will be good but will take time for the public to embrace them.  I kept trying and trying to embrace them.

I predicted this event weeks ago...

Like Gkerber I could not see at first the advantages of the panes over the tree only.
However after much playing with and learning just what you can do with them, I now think that the combination of tree and panes, really highlights the tremendous capabilities of the MC database.
I would urge anyone who is unsure of their power to persevere. There isn't much you can't quicly do with well organised schemes & panes.
From not seeing the point to now claiming they are the biggest step forward in the evolution of MC. Quite a turnaround for me!

I have come to see it like this:
I try to remember that MC is a Database.
Like any database program, it displays fields of data, which are more clearly displayed in a 'table', on a form, or in a pane . . . .  than in a tree.

Trees are great for the environment, wonderful for navigating through a computer's drives, but not the most flexible and clear for data display.
(In windows, once you navigate a tree you open a folder to see the data.)

Think of the tree as driving through city streets, navigating turn by turn . . . .  think of Panes as flying across all those streets, directly to you destination. A totally different form of navigation, yet much more efficient once mastered.  Like anything, there is a definate learning curve.

Yes for navigating through 'My Computer' a tree is easy and familiar, but for working with the data I am coming to believe that PANES RULE!

You're pointing to just a single database model...  the "relational" one.  Don't forget about the hierarchical database model - which predates the relational one!

No one can effectively argue that XML "data" doesn't make a "database" - there are many native XML databases on the market.  And each of these databases presents the data as a tree.

Just because the smallest element isn't displayed as a leaf on the tree doesn't mean that the presentation isn't hierarchical.  Windows Explorer is a great example of a hierarchical database.  There are no "relations" whatsoever.

OK...  I'll stop being pedantic.  By the way, I love the trees and the panes.

Trees, I love the shade, but hate raking the leaves in autumn.    :P

Point taken   ;)

Then just leave the leaves where they are and have a nice day with a rake ;D

But be careful with confessions afterwards :-X

You can look through a "pane" and see trees...

I hated them, absolutely couldn't stand them. Then, we sat down and had a discussion and we realized we had a lot in common, knew some of the same people, hung out at some of the same places. Now we're the best of friends (well, OK, may that's a bit too far)...we're getting along, the panes the trees and me. I even caught my wife easily thumbing through the views I had set up.

So yea, I like them, there are some very serious organizational features there.
