Statement of the problem
- my media server is playing a library consisting of uncompressed files, some of them (hi-rex either PCM or DSD) very large
- my ADSL connection is only one Mbps upstream (which is marginal with 16@44.1 FLAC but not enogh for higher bit rates)
- I connect from office, remotely
- I experience latency and buffering issue remotely
Question
- can I tell the server to pre-encode music to compressed formats (I like m4a)? before streaming and play them remotely as compressed music?

Tools > Options > Media Network > Client Options > Audio Conversion > Always Convert > MP3

I'll try the option 'convert to PCM if necessary' since I have enough bandwidth for PCM
Curious to check / understand what 'if necessary' menas for JRIver (i.e. how does it speculate on the used bandwidth)

I think it means "if the file is already MP3, do not convert it to MP3 (again), and maybe do not convert it to PCM either"... (but I am very likely to be wrong on this..)
