Dear collective wisdom,

I just bought an Onkyo TX-NR747 receiver and found out, to my surprise, that it plays DSD. Eager to test this, I threw a few ripped SACD at it, and no sound is coming from the unit, although JRiver appears to “play” the file, complete with the soundwave moving up and down.
I realize that it may be a hardware issue, but since it could be a settings issue, I will give you my setup in the hope that someone can help me.

AMD HDMI audio (from an old card – which could be the culprit: ATI 5570)
WASAPI event style
Bitstreaming turned to DSD
I even tried through the DSP menu (1xdsd dop etc …)

I did read this topic: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=103173.0 but in my case, I do not get an error message, just no sound coming out of the receiver.

Hopefully, someone can advise me.

PCs cannot output native DSD over HDMI, only DoP.
Reading through the manual for your receiver, it does not seem to support DoP.
It does support DSF/DFF playback via USB, and possibly network playback.
 
However there's a line in the manual which also recommends that you output PCM from your player instead of DSD anyway.

When JRiver bitstreams DSD the "vu meters" don't display anything, so if you see the soundwave moving up and down JRiver is not bitstreaming DSD.

Thank you all, somehow I couldn't find that info in the Manual, but it turns out pdf search wasn't working. As I didn't buy that unit for DSD specifically, it's really not a tragedy!

Have you looked at the Sound Properties settings for WASAPI in the Windows OS?

That reference is referring to a Blu-Ray or DVD player that can stream native DSD format. That is a common feature on modern Blu-Ray players. They were designed to do it.

To stream native DSD from a PC, the HDMI interface and driver have to be able to handle the DSD format and sample rate. I believe there are currently no HDMI interfaces and drivers on a PC  designed to stream native DSD format.  The problem is not with the receiver or with the player software but with the HDMI interface and driver on the PC. They just were not designed to be able to handle the native DSD format.
