Pono Player splitting up ripped albums
« on: April 19, 2016, 11:23:40 am »

Hello,

I've encountered a strange issue. Almost every CD I personally ripped (using iTunes ALAC) ends up getting split into two albums on the Pono player. Both albums are identically named, but some tracks are in one album, and some tracks are in the other. Typically, most of the songs are on the first album, and only a handful (sometimes 1!) of them are in this second album.

What is going on here? How can I get all of these songs under the same album on my Pono Player?

This usually caused by albums that have more than one artist on the same album.  Normally you can fix this by setting the [Album Artist] field to a single value for all songs on the album.  You can tell if this is the case by doing the following:

1.  Highlight both "albums" that are really one album.
2.  Open the Tag Action Window with Edit > Tag.
3.  Go find the [Artist] field.  If it says "Varies" then that means there is more than one value for artist across the various songs.  If it just has one value, then you have a different issue which is breaking your albums up.

Here's the Wiki entry on this:

If you need any more help with this, post back here with additional info and we'll try to help.

In Pono Music World, they all appear as the same album. Not only that, in some cases the tracks that are in one album have album art, and the tracks that are in the second "duplicate" albums do not.

Did you try the steps I outlined?  What were your results?

I've figured it out - the Album Artist (not just Artist) values varied. Correcting them worked. Thank you.

And to be clear, I could not do this through Pono Music World - I had to use Mp3tag

In PonoMusicWorld, Alt-Enter to bring up the Tag editor, then click the "hamburger" icon to the left of the word "Tag" and select "Show All Tags"

If you're going to be using PWM frequently, you should definitely try using the Tag Action Window some. It's quite powerful and very friendly once you figure out how to show the fields you want.

Good job on finding and fixing the problem.  :)
