From the audio path screen, what does that mean ?

somebody please correct me if I'm not completely right about tis, but I remember this happening when my DAC could not handle certain hi-rez files bit depth/sample rate combos - I think it was DSF files? not 100% sure now as I no longer have that problem. Solution for me was to down sample in JRiver the sample rates to those that the DAC can handle (DSP Studio - Output format).

It means that your DAC does not support the native bit-depth of the file you are trying to play.
E.g. a 24-bit DAC playing a 32-bit file.

I haven't seen this error so I could be wrong, but taken literally doesn't the message mean the output is at a lower bit depth than the input?  I would expect this when downgrading a 24 to a 16 for example...

If the DAC doesn't support, wouldn't MC give the unsupported format error?

If JRiver is allowed to convert DSD to PCM on-the-fly then this statement shows up. If BitStreaming is enabled for DSD, then the comment disappears. I assumed the iFi DSD Micro was unable to handle the 64 bit at 352.8 kHz rate for PCM

I had this problem, too.  I found it to be the wrong selection in output encoding.
I'm using an eXD Sonore.  I went to Player-DSP Studio-Output Encoding.  I had selected 2xDSD in native format.  When I chose 2xDSD in DoP format the "not using enough bits to output the input directly ".

And I had to set Tools-Options-Settings-Bitstreamimg(Yes)
