music skipping when playing from external hard drive

Bertram:
I have all my music loaded on an external hard drive.  It seems to play the songs just fine until randomly a song will begin and it will skip continuously.  I hit stop and restart the song and it plays fine.  Then after a few more songs play the next song will skip again continuously unless I hit stop and then start over.  Can anyone help?  I am unable to put music on the internal hard drive at work.
