JRiver on QNAP won't play hi-res files

JimH:
If you're using DLNA, the option is under Media Network.  Media Server > Conversion.

The software isn't "buggy".  You're using two features, at the same time, that are problematic.  First QNAP based MC.  Second, DLNA renderers.

If you're serious about audio reliability and consistency you're most likely going to find that a DLNA based audio device is the wrong way to do things.  A direct connection is far superior in pretty much every way that matters in audio.  USB, Toslink, Coax, AES are all better connection methods.

Still, I wish you good luck with your configuration.

Brian.

JimH:
QNAP is new for us and we've had some problems to fix.  It takes a while because we're working with people on the other side of the world

Brian, DLNA is sometimes a problem, but I wouldn't call it "problematic".  People sometimes need help getting it going and we are usually able to to do so.

I disagree.  But perhaps I only see the ones with problems here in the forum, which I see quite frequently.

Jim, would you own a DLNA renderer as your primary interface for listening to audio?  I wouldn't.  DLNA isn't a problem because JRiver supports it badly or anything.  It's a problem because of a lack of standards.  There are a lot of user expectations that just aren't met because many devices don't do one or two or three things that the owner is REALLY wanting and expecting.  DLNA is not a reliable consistent hi-fi interface technology.  It's just convenient and that's it.  All just my opinion of course.  Happy Sunday everyone.  :)

Brian.

JimH:
Yes, you see the problems.  We see similar problems with just about everything.  That's life.

I wouldn't suggest that you use DLNA.  It's your choice.  But please don't pour cold water on something you don't use.
