Playing QuickTime files in JRiver
« on: November 08, 2015, 04:57:25 am »

What's the best way to play mov and MP4 files taken with the iPhone - can't be the only one with issues here!
Whilst the videos look great, they are not rotated correctly.

I've tried the QuickTime renderer but a) the thumbnails don't render correctly (they're just white tiles) and b) there's no sound.

Many thanks for any advice.

So no one on this forum has videos captured on their iPhones they want to play back on JRiver?
I find that amazing!

Guys - what am I missing?

Can anyone point me to where I'm going wrong here please or is it that JRiver simply can't play QuickTime files properly?

Thanks.

Rotating videos is not currently supported, sorry.

With any luck it may be coming to Red October HQ soon, since its a feature from the video renderer, but Red October Standard unfortunately uses a renderer which does not offer this functionality.

Thanks Hendrik. I'm a Red October HQ aficionado, so that's great news.
Any idea on timing?

Hi Hendrik,

Did you manage to get it included in 21.030?

Thanks and best wishes for the holidays.

Yeah, it's in 21.0.30 via the madVR update.

Great - how does it work?!
All my vertical iPhone videos are still playing horizontally - is there a flag I have to set?

Looking at madVR's keyboard shortcuts...

Rotate video 90 degrees in clockwise direction: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Right
Rotate video 90 degrees in counterclockwise direction: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Left.

Obviously this needs to be done while the video is playing using Red October HQ.

If these files contain rotation metadata, they should rotate automatically. If this metadata is not available, you need to manually use the keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks - just had to clear out the madvr directory and let jriver re-download it.
Works a charm.

Thanks again to all.

Hmm... Mine are not. They're working, but not like a charm...

Thumbnails are still being built landscape instead of portrait, and when playing, they are portrait, and the OSD reports "63% (fit to screen)" but it's not "fit to screen, it's cropped off at the bottom, and attempting to reduce the zoom further simply results in a smaller rectangle, with black screen all around it, rather than display the cropped off bottom part of the video?

I did not clear out the madvr directory, and testing is on the 'VS' build.
I'll try clearing the plugin folder when I get home and see if that helps...

So, I've cleared out the plugin directory, and cleared out the [playback info] field, and it's just not happening for me...

Here, we have a file played back in Quicktime, in "Fit To Screen" mode...

and here, the same file, in MC. OSD states zoom is at 94%, Fit to window. but, as you see, it is seriously cropped....

Portrait thumbnails are still being built in landscape too :(

Any ideas?

I need to test it. I have a BUNCH of these, but hadn't been paying attention.

Do I need to re-Update Library (from Tags) or anything?

Okay, yeah... I confirm. But, first, this change by itself is huge. At least you don't strain your neck anymore. It is now usable, where it wasn't before. So thanks! Sorry I didn't notice before.

But, yeah, portrait videos still have problems.

* Landscape videos are fixed, even if upside-down, which is a huge improvement.
* Portrait videos play right-side-up, but they're cropped (to essentially a 16:9 width "hole" in the middle of a 9:16 video, making them almost-square). You can't "un-crop them" by zooming out. It won't play the top and bottom portions of the videos.

VLC Player and QuickTime both play this example video right, and MC does not:
http://glynor.com/files/jriver/iPhone_Vertical_Test.mov

Also on the thumbnailing. MC's thumbnail is still sideways after regenerating. Incidentally, the Windows Explorer thumbnail is correct.

And, worth throwing in there I suppose, my high-framerate videos are still slideshows.

Still, though, progress.  :)

These are still an issue :(

With the recent advice to ditch Quicktime in mind, is there any possibility of these portrait orientated .mov files playing correctly in MC?
