USB DAC fails to start playback in MC21 on Debian 8 under VMware Workstation 12

Playback works fine when using dsp and the built in soundcard but when I set the Audio Device in Options to my usb dac(chord mojo in this case)  playback never begins.  The playback time sits at 0:00

I've tried changing the Audio Device to all of the options with Mojo in the description as well as changing the USB type of the guest between 2 and 3 with no change in ability to start playback.  I've also tried changing the Output Format and sample sizes but nothing seems to work.

Am I missing something covered in another forum post?  Is this known behavior or am I just lucky?

Edit: It is probably worth mentioning that playback via Windows 10 vm on the same host using the same media and usb dac works fine.
