Any interest moving to new Geforce 1070/1080 models ?
« on: June 20, 2016, 12:38:00 pm »

Hi guys,

I need your opinion about doing the good choice for a graphic card (I own a GTX 970).
I heard Geforce 1070/1080 are coming...

Is there any advantage moving to them (except for HEVC hw decoding) ?

1 - Due to HDMI 2.0 limitation, 2160p50 or 60 with RGB 444 at 10 bits is not possible
2 - Even if 10 bits option is available in the Nvidia Control Panel, this options seems working only for pro cards (quadro)

Quote
"Pro" cards is 10-bit OpenGL, however consumer cards can do 10-bit through Direct3D.

Quote
NVIDIA Geforce graphics cards have offered 10-bit per color out to a full screen Direct X surface since the Geforce 200 series GPUs. Due to the way most applications use traditional Windows API functions to create the application UI and viewport display, this method is not used for professional applications such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop. These programs use OpenGL 10-bit per color buffers which require an NVIDIA Quadro GPU with DisplayPort connector. A small number of monitors support 10-bit per color with Quadro graphics cards over DVI.

Looks like only ATI cards would produce a good 10 bits outptut.

You confirm these ?
From your point of view, what is the best and the bad between;

2160p60 - RGB 444 - 8 bpc
2160p60 - RGB 422 - 10 bpc
2160p60 - RGB 420 - 10 bpc

Maybe I should wait for the new ATI cards coming at the end of the month.
Is ATI do a better job than Nvidia for MadVr/Lav stuff ?

regards.

I'm toying with a 1080 GTX, but I'm a silly gamer!

10-bit works fine on ordinary Geforce Cards, and always has, Quadro is not required.
AMD/ATI is not going to provide anything "better", in recent months they have been plagued by driver troubles once again which went as far as crashing with ROHQ.

Which format you want to use is up to you. Nearly all consumer video content is 420 or at best 422 anyway, so with real world video content you will likely not see a difference when using 422.
With proper dithering, you'll likely also not see a difference with 8-bit however.

Do you have a 4k screen? I'm perfectly happy with my 980Ti for gaming, but when a full UHD bluray solution for PC is available, I'll have to find a way to upgrade for HDCP 2.2 (unless that solution includes redfox). That will be a pain because I have my 980Ti liquid cooled, so I guess I'll have to reattach the original cooler before I could sell it.

Oh yeah? What games? :P

I've got my eye on the 1070 for this IPS 1440p monitor. Maybe I'll get a new monitor at some point too for some 8-bit or 10-bit color.

I wish IPS 1440p GSync monitors were cheaper (and more reliable). :(

I have this monitor:

My brother told me how great it was and I just couldn't help myself!

Honestly I can run pretty much everything maxed out right now anyway so it's kind of silly to upgrade, but it's just been so long I might have to do it anyway!

They are already here.  :)

That is why I use DisplayPort for 2160p60 RGB 10bits. I use a BenQ BL2711U monitor.

Like Hendrik said, 10-bit works fine on any Geforce card.

2160p60 - RGB 422 - 10 bpc
2160p60 - RGB 420 - 10 bpc

There is no such thing as RGB 422 or 420. RGB is always 444. YCbCr is 444, 422, or 420. Typically, the best output from a graphics card is always RGB - even if it is 8 bit. You can use the colorspace pattern on the Spears and Munsil Blu-ray Calibration disc to determine if there is any noticeable difference.

There is a limitation somwhere using my GTX 970.
For those who tested new Nvidia cards (1080 / 1070), are they capable to output 10 or 12 bits above 30Hz ( @2160p RGB 444) ?

For HDR content I would avoid the GC downgrade from 10 bits or more to 8 bits (even if MadVr dithering does a good job here).

The GTX 970 and the 1070/1080 all support the same resolutions and bit-depths via HDMI. This is limited to 2160p RGB 60Hz 8-bit. This is because the maximum bandwidth of HDMI 2.0/2.0b is 18 Gbps.

The GTX 970 has DisplayPort 1.2 and the GTX 1070/1080 support DisplayPort 1.4. DisplayPort 1.2 has a maximum bandwidth of 21.6 Gbps. This means the GTX 970 can support 2160p RGB 60Hz at 10 bit. DisplayPort 1.4 has a maximum bandwidth of 32.4 Gbps and can support 2160p at 12 bits.

Mine does. It's a panasonic ax800 but unfortunately only dp 1.2 and I believe they've discontinued the port on future models.

Edit - I ordered the 1060...

I don't think I "need" it and there's a chance I won't really utilize all of it's potential but I"m in the mood for my HTPC to be all that it can be. (Not buying the 6 or 7 hundred dollar cards tho)

Edit - Installed the 1060 yesterday ... May give away my GTX 750... not sure yet.
Have no idea how to tune MadVR for the 1060 ... I still have a lot to learn.
