You can't use MMC 8.x without an MMC 8.x authorized CD. The ATI AiW 8500 came with MMC 7.x. The newest cards come with MMC 8.x.

You can download updates which you can use, if authorized.

They made life fun for their customers... :|

I am using TV with only the WDM drivers for my card, and to my knowledge that is all you need. The MMC software is only if you are using their software for TV and PVR functions, etc. I seem to remember a thread on this over at avsforum where someone had issues like this. I'll see if I can find it and post a link.
