I was forced to use AnyDVD to play a music DVD with video because I had a message saying my player was incompatible.
what program are you using to rip your DVD's. I am using JRiver 22.

MakeMKV is the business. Never had a need to run it from within a VM, so can't comment.

Did you try to configure your VM client to "own" the physical DVD-rom device ?
My thought is that MakeMKV is communicating directly to the device issuing normally forbidden commands to get around copy protection.

Yes, I have MakeMKV working fine in VirtualBox (Windows 7 running in VirtualBox on a Linux host).

In the virtual machine settings under storage you need to set the DVD drive to Passthrough mode otherwise I don't think it will work.

Yes, I have MakeMKV working fine in VirtualBox (Windows 7 running in VirtualBox on a Linux host).

Out of curiosity, why are folks running MakeMKV in a VM?  It has a native Linux version.  Or are folks running on a NAS or something where the host environment can't run general purpose software?

You can have JRiver watch the directory that Makemkv outputs to, and JRiver will automatically import the files.  You have to set it up, but after that, it works pretty well for me

To be perfectly honest it is out of laziness. I tried and failed to get MakeMKV working in Linux a long time ago and rather than persevering I gave up and just ran it in VirtualBox which I already had installed for other stuff. I don't use it on the Linux PC much anyway because I don't have a Bluray player in that PC. MakeMKV is normally used on another PC running Windows 7 as it has a Bluray drive installed.

thanks for reply.  i am running ubuntu's qemu/kvm and it's not as straightforward as VirtualBox, but i'll look for the proper setting.

under ubuntu, you can't run 2 vm managers at the same time and i use the native vm manager as it seems like it would be more efficient, yet i may switch to VirtualBox.

two reasons -
     1.  i use makemkv frequently.  unlike most people, i felt it ethically necessary to actually buy a license.  it's for Windows only.
     2.  i can't hassle with linux, so whenever possible i run in a Windows vm.  i run MC server there.

next chore is to use a macOS cheat installed in a vm, so i can finally sell that POS Mini.

macOS/OS X performance in a virtual machine is terrible, actually. I wouldn't sell that POS Mini yet!
