Recommended PC sound card to play 24bit 96-192KHZ music
« on: September 22, 2016, 03:07:35 pm »

I would like recommendations of a PC sound card to play flac 24 bit - 96/192 KHZ music.
According to the specs the Sound blaster ZXR can do it.
I wonder also about the Asus Essence STXII.
Has anybody tried any of them or others cards that can he can recommend?

What are you trying to play the music to?  Amp / Receiver, Computer speakers etc???

I had tried the Asus Zonar but had too many issues.  In the end I went with an upper end Video card with HDMI and output that to my Receiver.

Works great that way.

I have Asus STX II with my Devialet D-200. Because Devialet AIR was not working for me over a long time I tried 3 different solutions:

1. Using Optical SPDIF with Realtek 1150 on the mainboard
2. Using Sotm USB card (no external PSU)
3. Asus STX II

From my experience I liked the sound of the STX II most, it had more body than 1. and 2 and sounds smoother, more relaxed. I have used the soundcard for almost a year. I have used the ASIO drivers - sounds best. No problems so far. The GUI of the software is not state of the art, but works.

So yes - I could recommend it.
( In the mean time, Devialet has deployed AIR3-ß, which works now, so I don't use STX II anymore on my HTPC and it is gone into my PC)

I also tried the xonar and really liked it. It had a volume normalizer, but it lacked the ability to play some formats, so I went the hdmi route too. You don't even need to use the video card for video, and you can buy a really cheap HDMI card (sub 40 bucks) that does all the way up to Atmos. MC really likes to use HDMI sound. It never complains it can't play a file. (Almost) :)
