Master License Doesn't Work LEAP 42.1- Solved
« on: October 03, 2016, 10:21:32 am »

I've built a music server for a friend that runs openSUSE LEAP 42.1.  He bought a MC22 Master License so he could also use it on his and his wifes Mackintosh's. He is not very computer literate so I am working on this.
He was able to install the Master License fine on their Mac laptops. However on the Linux it always gets an error that it failed to communicate with the registration server. MC22 worked properly during the trial period.
Here is what I tried so far:

Turned off firewall on both router and Linux.
Tried "update-ca-certificate" in Terminal. No updates were needed.
Tried mediacenter22 /RestoreFromFile "Media Center22 Master-YYYYYY.mjr" from the proper location etc. Said registration failed.
Uninstalled and reinstalled MC22 many times.
I tried it on my openSUSE Tumbleweed with a different router, modem etc. Same exact errors.
I would like to purchase a license for this also but not if doesn't work with openSUSE which is what I mostly use. So how do I get this to work?

Thanks,

Dave

I tried both 22.0.19 and 22.0.30 of Jessie AMD64 as the systems are AMD based.

I just tried to register a copy of MC22 on openSUSE 13.2 and got the same "failed to communicate with registration server" error as before.  Different computer with different hardware etc. Seems MC22 doesn't work with openSUSE LEAP 42.1, Tumbleweed or 13.2. It will install and run fine until the the trail expires and then you cannot register it with a valid master license.

Ok I did the link as in those posts and still says "Error: could not communicate with registration server."
but wtf?
So I tried the .mjr method again and this time it said it was successful. BUT when I launch MC22 it STILL says trial period expired and asks for the key which of course it rejects with the same error....
So I uninstalled everything and tried again. Same result.

I just tried it on another computer. The first one has Tumbleweed and this one LEAP 42.1. Same exact results.

Also just tried a 3rd computer running openSUSE 13.2.
Added the link for the ssl certs
entered key - "error: failed to communicate with registration server"
Tried .mjr method. Again it says it was successful.
Launch a fresh install of MC22
Says trial period expired.
Repeated everything - same result.

So I am guessing nobody has gotten registration to work on Tumbleweed or LEAP? There is a sticky in this forum that tells how to install MC om opensuse/tumbleweed etc using alien. That does work and it will run properly until the trial period expires. Seeing that thread led me to believe MC was usable on opensuse distro's. Not very usable if you can't register it. I built a music server for a friend and he purchased the license as he will be the one using MC. I now have to find another way to make it work for him. I already showed him kodi which would function but he doesn't like it. Now he may be stuck with a license that is useless to him. I hope someone can come up with a solution to this. I did not know opensuse distros were not supported and thought they were as there was a sticky for installing MC for them.

I just made a discovery that may help:
I found that if I launch MC22 from terminal it comes up registered! If I launch it with the desktop or menu icon it comes up with the "trail period expired" box.
So now just have to figure out why and how to make it launch from a menu/launcher/desktop icon and be registered. Seems like its not seeing one of its config files when not launched from terminal.

Did some sleuthing. Think I found the problem. The desktop/launcher/menu launches mediacenter22 %F. %F is supposed to have a list of files after it that it accesses or launches with mediacenter22. There is nothing listed after %F so /usr/bin/mediacenter22 is launching without something it needs to access. So what file or files do I need to list after the %F?
I did try removing the %F and got same result. But %F with nothing after it would be the same as not using %F.

It doesn't need anything other than /usr/bin/mediacenter22 to launch.

Make sure it runs as a user, not root. Sounds like you are mixing the two.

I'm running it as it was installed. I have not changed any permissions, locations etc. Besides it ran fine during the trial period and nothing else was changed. This is also happening on multiple computers.
Edit: Just verified permissions set as user in desktop icon in menu/launcher/ desktop.
In fact just the opposite is happening, It only runs properly from terminal in root mode.
In trial mode it ran fine either way.

I finally figured it out. When I was applying the .mjr file I was in root mode because when I wasn't it failed every time. But it succeeded in root mode but then MC22 would only run registered in root. I found that once you register it in root and THEN redo it from your user then it works fine from your user. If someone else runs into this problem I hope this will help some. I never was able to get it to work with the key however.
