[Mildly OT] iTunes, BuyMusic.com, etc... question
« on: July 24, 2003, 05:44:30 pm »

So you buy these tracks from BuyMusic.com or iTunes.com and they have all this DRM, right... you can copy it X times, download it your player Y times, burn it to CD Z times, etc... but if they let you burn it to CD, even one time, then what's to stop you from ripping it back and  re-encoding it, thereby completely circumventing the DRM? You'd lose a little quality, but my tests have shown negligible quality loss (at least to my ears) when decoding and then re-encoding to the same format/bitrate.

Seems so obvious to me that I'm wondering if they found a way to stop it.

I may be wrong, but if you burn and re-rip those files, don't they not work?  I remember reading that somewhere. I think it said that they are all static-y on purpose if they are re-ripped. I don't know if this is accurate or not, I just think I remember reading it somewhere. I don't have any services like iTunes or BuyMusic.

It would be nice it it worked the way you describe :-) I hope it does!
