Amazon Echo / dot

Anyone know if the new amazon toys will act as upnp devices allowing streaming from MC?

If you google a bit you will see that there are already plugins that seem to enable it to act as a Control Point for UPnP renderers. And MC is a renderer, so in theory it would work too. But Amazon really wants to sell you their own media streams so they probably have mixed motives on this..

PS this is also interesting:  https://www.alexaskillstore.com/Smart-Home

Cracking stuff. Many thanks.

Might be worth buying myself a christmas present.....

But it's not the answer I was looking for, I suspect because I probably asked the wrong question (no change there).

What I really wanted to ask was whether an echo/dot would appear as a DLNA(?) device on my network to which I could send music from MC, either directly or via JRemote. So at the moment I have 2 av receivers, a TV, and an internet radio to which I send music from JRemote. Would an Echo or dot appear or work in the same way.

Putting it all together, in the demo video for House Band, I suppose the ultimate solution is to be able to ask Alexa to play a choice of music on itself rather than on the device running MC. Almost certainly the wrong termoniology but does that make sense? So I could sit in my floating armchair like a passenger from Wall-E and say "Alexa play my ambient playlist in the lounge" ;-)

I think you could possibly get the Echo to play MC music "on itself" by putting a USB audio Bluetooth transmitter in your PC, set that as MC's audio output device, and have the Echo play the Bluetooth stream. (Note that I don't have any of these devices, so it's just a guess..)

When I ask Alexa to play a song, I can only hear it through my pc and not through Alexa speakers.
How can I change this?

I have an Echo Dot.  When I tried to enable it to the House Band skill, it told me that the JRiver MC must be accessible from outside the home network.  That raised all bunch of red flags.  I just can't allow it.  There is no reason that everything has to go through the Internet for a local playback.

I am not sure about opening up our home network to the world approach.  Port forwarding is punching a hole on the firewall and is scary.  Have we not heard of IoT attacks?

That is the fundamental problem with Amazon Dot, or Siri, or Cortana, or Google thingy. All of them send your voice message to the hq server for parsing, and the hq server has to access your LAN to execute the parsed command. (Big brother is watching you). If you can't live with that, then don't do it...
