Now that USB Audio 2.0 is standard with the creators build of Windows 10, will JRiver support that driver set and will one need the ASIO drivers that are DAC specific anymore?

ASIO is always superior, if a proper driver is available. The USB 2.0 driver in Windows will only offer WASAPI and DirectSound. But it should just work in MC in those modes.

In my own testing, it does.

Still have to get ASIO drivers from the DAC vendors though, e.g. there's no standalone ASIO drivers for Schiit DACs on Windows 10.

I stay confused regarding this subject....

In my very limited experience something that is "plug and play" typically works better than a DAC with a 3rd party driver. Maybe having a "proper driver" is the key. All of my USB DACS are low end.... the plug and play ones work without issue in Win 8.1 (Schiit Modi, HiFimeDIY, Behringer UCA202, Creative X-Fi SB Surround Pro 1095). Have used them very little with Win 10, Win 8.1 is my current main system OS. Now, getting some of them to work with DRM such as Netflix, whole different story.

The only two DAC units I have that are USB 2.0 and don't work in Windows without drivers are the Behringer UMC202HD and Scarlett 2i2. With the latest drivers both work well in Win 8.1, although the Scarlett may emit random weird noises or get very distorted if left playing for long periods in MC. The Behringer seems more stable, but I haven't used it much in extended playback testing. The 2i2 issues could be OS, driver, or my particular machine's hardware, don't really know, but many others are reporting similar issues. What I do know is how the 2i2 performs using MC with my anemic 8 year old laptop that's dual boot between a fresh install of Win 7 32 bit and Linux Mint 32 bit. In Win 7 the 2i2 is barely usable between all the clicks and noise, in Mint it plays flawlessly for days, even 192K tracks.

When I heard Creators Update contained USB 2.0 I was very excited, only to find after installing it on one newer notebook and a solid new I3 PC I built that neither DAC works natively yet. I've had the feeling for the last couple of years that Win 10 really throws the 3rd party coder folks for a loop, and it seems there's always a new tweak released that screws with audio.

I can fully understand why the audio pros have always and continue to use Mac.....things just work.
