Starting from square #1; which Linux distro?
« on: April 10, 2017, 08:06:34 am »

I have a NUC arriving soon to use as the streaming device attached to my home theater, and I want to use Linux.  I read the threads in the Linux sections and need advice on which distro to use.  I do know some are "free" and maybe they all are?  Anyway, I will donate to whichever distro I use if it is free.

As for which flavor I use, should I just go with Debian Jessie 64-bit as that's the one on which MC for Linux is developed?  This box will be dedicated to JRiver.

Ubuntu or Linux Mint are my recommendations. If you're more used to a Windows-like experience, then Linux Mint. If you go this route, check out the pinned tutorials in this forum section!

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

Thanks.  I don't expect to ever see the Linux desktop. The box will be a dedicated JRiver media streamer.

Then go for plain vanilla, debian (the officially supported distro).

You could also consider running an Id usb kit.

JRiver boots from a USB stick?  I was reading a bit about that.  I need to digest the unRAID/JRiver issue before I can move on.

You're keen on booting from a USB aren't you?
