Unable to play Hi-res music w/MC22 on MacBook Pro
« on: April 30, 2017, 05:04:59 pm »

MC 22/Mac works nicely on my iMac but I have not been able to play hi-res music files from my older MacBook Pro. Both computers run macOS Sierra. Do I have a hardware problem?

The MB Pro processor is an Intel Core i7 (2 cores, 2.66GHz).

The error message reads:

Playback Problem
Details:
Playback could not be started on the output “Core Audio” using the format 44.1 kHz 2ch. (or whatever format I select.) ...etc.

The same files will play over my network, where I believe they are first converted to MP3.

Make sure you are selecting your sound output device specifically in the audio options:

Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device > (Select here)

Do NOT select "Default".

I suspect that you may have some sort of bluetooth audio device hooked up and MC is trying to talk to it.  If that's actually what you want, then we'll need to do a little configuration.  But I'm guessing you actually want to use the built in sound output of the MBP.  Select it in the above location, press OK, then restart MC and try again.

Wi-Fi and bluetooth are turned off on the MBP. The audio output from the MBP goes to a DragonFly connected to a USB port. Thanks for alerting me to the Device Selection in MC - I had missed that. But it didn't resolve the issue.

The analog output from the DragonFly goes to an analog input on a Denon AVR-X4100W. I'd be happy to have any further thoughts that occur to you.

Can the system play sounds through the Dragonfly?  Can other players play music through it?

Yes. The DragonFly works with MC22 on the iMac and also with iTunes on the MBP. Files that play on iTunes produce the error when played on MC22.

The files (all purchased from HDTracks) have various sample rates and 24 bit depth. They are .aif format.

As a test, have you tried converting a file to FLAC, Apple Lossless, Wave or Monkey's Audio and seeing if it'll play then? If it does play, it might be an issue with AIFF playback.

I converted a file to .m4a. It plays on iTunes but gets an error from MC22.

One thing you might try is going to the Applications folder > Utilities folder and opening the Audio MIDI Setup app. From there change the Output of your DAC to the highest bit depth/sample rate available. Some DACs can't playback hi-res audio on Mac sometimes, unless setting this to the highest output settings in Audio MIDI Setup.

Example screenshot (in my case the highest would be 32-bit 2 channel 192 kHz): http://i.imgur.com/ic2YtGP.png

After that, then try again. :)
