MC 22.0.108 crashing each time
« on: May 31, 2017, 10:36:23 am »

The program started crashing beginning yesterday afternoon.  Now it crashes within a minute of being launched.  Have had the new version for nearly 3 weeks now and had no issues until yesterday.
I am running Windows 10 professional 64 bit on Alienware 17 machine - if this info helps.

Appreciate the response Jim.
So the suggestion is to remove the anti-virus software and the issue will be resolved?

My earlier version of MC 19.0.163 runs fine with no issues!

No.  That's a possibility, but a Windows update is also a possible cause.

Not trying to be funny but every time I see an issue reported it's either an AV issue or a Windows issue. Never a media center issue.

Anyway to the OP. Going back to MC 22.0.105 solved my .108 crashing issue. Since reverting back to 105 I've yet to have one crash. Currently running Windows 10 Pro x64 (Version 1703, Build 15063.322), this is the very latest non-insiders build. I've also disabled automatic updates in Media Center. Will just stick with .105 till whenever.

And I did post my issue on this here - https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,110726.msg765312.html#msg765312.

It's just experience. If a build is crashing for a very small minority, or just one or two people, its quite likely an external cause - and AV solutions are often worse offenders than the viruses they try to protect you from.

Sometimes a reinstall can already help just in case the AV somehow caused the install to go wrong somewhere, sometimes its a runtime issue.

Here's a partial list of problems caused by antivirus software:

The fact that 105 works and 108 doesn't work means nothing.

Seems to have been resolved.
I uninstalled 22.0.108 and reinstalled it.  Seemed to have taken care of the issue.  Perhaps the 108 update didn't load smoothly or perhaps it was a Windows update issue.
In any event...
Thanks for your help guys.

It also doesn't mean it's explicitly a Windows issue either. Not trying to be argumentative but it's not like I'm some inexperienced person who doesn't know their way around PC's and Windows troubleshooting. I've been, and continue to be, an active member in a few Windows tech forums including Seven, Vista, Eight, and Ten forums. Same screen name. I'm also a PC builder.

Anyway while I like to say anything PC is possible, I find it incredibly hard to believe Windows's default AV (Defender) causes the problems you claim it does. If so, that would mean Media Center isn't Windows 10 (and Eight) compatible as these OS incorporate by default, the Defender AV.  I've also stated, I don't use third party AV's. Just Defender!

Can Windows cause problems with other apps/software... yes. Can other apps be at fault... YES!  And yes... NO software on this planet is perfect either. I'm just saying you can't lay blame on one side and not look at the other.  It just seems to me there's a one sided look here.

My two cents.

As Hendrik said, we don't pay a lot of attention to problems that are reported by a small number of people.  They usually have causes other than MC, and that is a very long list.  It includes drivers, hardware defects, Windows bugs, network mis-configuration, etc.

Have you ever looked at the Weird Problems thread in my signature?  And that's not an exhaustive list.

The wiki has a topic on Windows Defender.

Given the tone here I know not to seek further assistance and will look to move elsewhere whenever I decide to move on from Media Center 22.

Thanks for at least allowing me to voice my concerns.

You can close my account here.

Peace:)
