Hey folks! I'm not having a problem with MC22 per say, but thought there may be some Mac Mini uses out there who might be able to help me out. I'm currently running a late 2012 Mac Mini via HDMI into a Yamaha RX-V479 Receiver (which in turn goes to a Toshiba 49" 4k TV (49L621U). At present, no matter what I do, the Mac Mini will only allow up to 24/96KHz output via the Audio Midi Setup. I assume it is a Mac Mini issue as it down samples anything above those rates whether I'm using MC 22, VLC...etc). I have researched for days on line and found that some others have experienced this same issue yet some have had no issues with the Mini playing higher res files (in fact, some are using Mini's older than the 2012 version). There appears to be no definitive word from Apple other than the sound card "should' be able to handle it.  There has been some mention of the need of an external DAC, but nothing consistent. Currently, I'm just wondering if I can make this Mini work for higher res files or whether I need to move on to something else. Any info or insight would be greatly appreciated....thanks!

Thanks for the replies (I have read those streams already). So you all think I should ditch HDMI for audio out and go through USB with external DAC?

Why don't you try USB with your Yamaha? It supports up to 24/192 PCM and DSD 5.6Mhz via USB. When it's connected that way you select the Yamaha through Audio MIDI Setup and you should be able to set the higher rates.

I'm relatively certain that MC is set up, by default, to down sample everything above 96kHz down to 96kHz.

Check the settings here:

Player > DSP Studio > Output format > Sample rate

Look at the 192kHz line and see what it's output is set to.  If it's not set to "no change", then set it to that.  Then save and restart MC and try again.

Thanks again for the replies....blgentry.....when I reset those values to "no change" MC won't even play the tracks. I get a prompt that my hardware is not compatible. Again, I think it must be a mac mini issue as the Audio Midi settings won't give me any option above 96KHz. I may try the USB route and see what happens.

I plugged my wife's 2014 MacBook Pro up to my system When I opened up the audio MIDI, I could immediately select 24/192kHz with no issues.  So it would appear that it is a hardware related issue as both of these machines are .running the same latest OS .  So if I wanted to hook up to the Yamaha via USB, I would need to go through the headphone out jack?

No, the USB jack. My 2010 Mac Mini will output 24/192 through the USB.

Daverich4 is right. You have use USB, as it is the only option to obtain 192K. The optical output will reduce again to 96. (Look again in the apple link I sent in my earlier reply☺️).

Again all, thanks for the replies......I have several 5.1 files as well.....will these work via USB?

The stereo files will definitely work  going out to the Yamaha via  USB or network. The 5.1 files will likely not work going through the network though
they MIGHT work being output via USB. It all depends if the DAC that is associated with the USB audio in the Yamaha supports multi-channel audio.
