Run MC at Linux start
« on: June 13, 2017, 02:23:45 pm »

I have turned on this feature, but Media Center does not autorun at Linux start.  Also, the iteration I run as the library server does not give me the option of starting the Media Server at Linux start.  What might I be doing wrong?

The startup options do nothing on Linux (I don't think it's possible to support it, actually - the startup options should probably be removed from the Linux version). Depending on distro/desktop environment you'd have to add MC to the distro's startup applications manually (assuming there's a GUI/app way to do it in the desktop environment, otherwise it's the hard way).

Also depends if you want Media Server started or just Media Center, etc.

Thanks. I have started looking at Linux (Debian/XFCE) methods for running applications on logon.  Is there a separate executable for running (only) the library/media server?

Actually all of the Options->Startup options work on linux with the exception of the last one:

Run on Linux startup

Which as you say should be removed from the Startup options.

Yeah, that's what I meant; run at startup. Is the update channels listed there too (not on *nix at the moment, so I can't see if the option is available)? I can't imagine it does (and require manual apt repository changes).

EDIT: No, the update channels are gone, excellent!

Lying in bed, waking up, not on 'nux either  :) but in the last two weeks I have installed, wiped the drive and reinstalled Linux and MC a dozen times.  After entering the command lines for latest repository, updating and installing MC, I can answer that I haven't seen anything anywhere in the settings about "update channels."  Based on what I have read on the installation instructions for Linux, automatic updates were baked in I thought.  So it's not and I will need to do it manually?

If you're using one of the APT repos (stable, latest or beta - I'd suggest latest unless you desire pure stability!) in Debian/Ubuntu/Mint/elementaryOS/etc. updates are handled through the distro's package manager.

Ok so I do need to be proactive and take action to update MC?  I seemed to have misunderstood that it happened automatically.

Well, if you're using Debian all you have to do is check for updates on the system using whatever package manager ships with Xfce (once one of the APT repos was added).

The latest (and likely last) MC22 build is 22.0.108.
