Naming Files w/ Tag Info
« on: July 02, 2003, 04:49:54 am »

I was wondering where the best place to look for this documentation is.  I've looked several times, probably missed the obvious spot, but as yet, I have only found very cursory information.  I'd really like a list of all of the options/field names when tagging.

As well as any other options that are available, i.e. can I limit the length of any tags?

Thanks,
kiwi

go to settings under (options)

go to an icon something like file naming, then select the format you wish.

this recently changed slightly and i am going off of memory.

but you can select from formats built into MC9 or you can create your own like

[ARTIST] - [NAME]

Basically any field in the database, even those you create yourself, can be used to name files. Just stick the display name between [] and you're good to go.

Cool.  I guess that there are things like the Date where I found that I had to put in [Date(Year)] or something like that to get out what I wanted.

I've been using it, I can get it to do the simple things that I want, but there are some more complicated things that I would like to try with it.

Plus I have had problems renaming files when they are over a network, no error came up, but the files had some problems... I guess that it created file names, that with their path length got to be too long, it would be nice for MC to prompt on that.

Shoot.  I haven't played with it since moving to the beta 9.1.  (I did all my renaming with 9.0 before switching.)  The new beta has a much better system.  It gives you the options.  VERY COOL!!!  Thanks.  (Would like an advanced sub menu, with all options.)

Still wondering whether there is a way to control the length of any one tag?  Many of my classical albums have names, and tracks with names that are VERY VERY long.  And cause problems.

DIR: [Artist]\[Album] ~ [Genre] ~ [Year]

File: [Track #] ~ [Name] ~ [Artist]

So, are the fields that I can use in the []'s the ones listed as library fields in the Tree&View section?

Thanks for the help.

Although I wouldn't try it with [LYRICS]. That gets messy real fast. Trust me.

But I guess that's what the Undo function is for...
