What Was This???
« on: July 01, 2003, 05:10:58 am »

I was attempting to re-import all my music files & a MC dialog box poped up.  I just clicked on it. Then something called Windows Media 9 started to download.  It was 4 mb in size.  I don't think it was Windows Media Player 9 from Microsoft as my Media Player v8 still loads plus there were no new icons in the Start menu.

What is it ? ? ?

Yeah, it used to be included with the MC\MJ download and installed by default.

Now it only downloads and installs if it determines that you actually need it.

I'm wondering if it's accurately detecting whether or not you already have in installed, though.

You got the Windows codex.
Even if you have WMP 8, there is the new WMA9 codex.
You may have an audio ,or video file who relies on this 9 codex.

To me ,it is of great help:
i have some WMA9 audio files and can play them ,even with only WMP 6 -- the one on my W2000 disc- installed

I don't know if this has any bearing on the mystery or not, but every once in a while MC would produce a...

Media Center is not installed.  Do you want to install it now?

I tried the OK button but nothing happened.  I would try the No button & MC would continue running just fine.

It seems that this message meant nothing or at least it did nothing.

Oh well, what can I say... IT'S BETA.  ;D

Just had another thought ?

I had just installed Win XP (full re-format of hard drive) from a diaster a few days ago.

I decided that this time I would not install any of Microsoft's updates (critical or otherwise) as in he past none of them did anything that I could tell for my computer.

* They did not improve performance (in fact SP1 caused a slow down for me).
* They did not improve realiability.
* One of them (Windows Journal Veiwer.msi) is what caused the disaster in the first place that required a re-format of the hard drive.

Soooo... I'm running the original XP Professional without any updates.

Could this be why MC installed Windows Media 9 ? ?

What do you mean ?
You got the full WMAPplayer ?
Or the WMA9 codex ?

Now ,if your XP running fine ,it is good news for the ones running a pirate version......

Win Xp comes with WMP Xp ( Version 8 ) MC9 requires Wmp 9 or Codec 9 to play WMA files, install WMP9 for Win XP and create a restore point before installing and MC runs fine
