Restore license
« on: September 08, 2017, 10:12:16 am »

Hello,

I am trying to create a portable app and install it on a different computer. License is never restored, no matter how many times I try (already used 7 temporary install keys). I enter the license key and automaticaly receive an email with a mjr file. After, I am applying the mjr file from command line with  /RestoreFromFile option (the computer has no gui) and receive a small window with the message: "Could not restore license from file". Please help.

You can't do that.

You can use the Portable Install to install to a drive and use the drive on another machine.  You must do this from a machine that is already licensed.

Or you could just install MC the same way you did on the first machine.

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, installing from a computer with no graphical interface is not possible on windows, that is why I choose this method.

This is what I did, I created a portable install from another computer. On that computer the portable version it is licensed correctly. When I move it to the new computer the program is starting in 30 days trial mode. This is why I try to relicense again.

I understand now, I have to use the initial drive like a usb stick, I can not copy the files to another computer drive. Adressing the problem with non gui installation would be a good great.

How could you ever install MC without a GUI?  It's a Windows program.  So you necessarily need a GUI right?  Or am I missing something ?

That is neat, using a Unix Command Line Switch (/RestoreFromFile) on a Windows PC running without a GUI.

That certainly shows that MC is single sourced and compiled for all platforms.

That Command Line Switch should probably be mentioned in the Wiki: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/The_Command_Line
Are there other Unix Command Line Switches that would work in Windows, and should be in the Wiki?

Newer versions of windows can run without a graphical interface. That does not mean that you can not run programs with a graphical interface just the os does not have one (all programs must be started from command line). This has an auditible efect on sound (quite an obvious effect).

Huh? You mean Windows Server, right? Core Mode?

If so, running MC on Windows Server OSes is NOT supported by JRiver. Otherwise, honestly, I don't think extreme system mods like running Windows without the Windows UI and tweaking system services and all that stuff like that should be supported either (for the sake of "audiophile" beliefs or whatever) but that's my personal opinion. Heck, I'd bet that trying to run MC in setups like that is already not supported at all (e.g. like those audiophile "optimizers"), Jim?

christianr,
Awesome Donkey is correct.  We don't support this use case.
