iTunes and Apple Lossless
« on: October 30, 2017, 05:02:47 am »

I feel really freaking dumb right now, and I am here because I'm hoping that it's less that I am clueless than it is that Apple doesn't know how to properly label things in their store. This is aside from the annoyance of having to download iTunes--one of the most bloated applications I've ever witnessed--to access their music store in the first place, but that's a whole other rant.

Are Apple Lossless (ALAC) tracks offered on the iTunes store? If so, are they clearly marked when they're available? The entries at which I've looked so far don't say anything about the files they're offering--what format, sample rate, bit rate...nothing. There is honestly no excuse for this in 2017, and it is yet another layer of frustration atop the already-numerous other layers stemming from the application itself.

The album I bought using the iTunes store is not legally available elsewhere at all, and doesn't appear to be available even illegally in a lossless format, so it's not too much skin off my back if Apple made the inexplicable decision not to support their own lossless format in their own music store. I'd just like to know so I can make sure I'm not being incredibly stupid, here.

Nope, lossless downloads aren't offered in the iTunes Store. If they actually did add lossless downloads in the future, I'd actually start using the iTunes Store again to purchase some exclusive albums, EPs and bonus tracks.

Well ain't that dumb as hell?

What's ALAC's distribution platform, then?

...Not that it would threaten FLAC's primacy regardless.

I believe some sites that sell lossless tracks (e.g. HDTracks) provides ALAC downloads (in addition to FLAC, AIFF, etc.).

Interesting.

So basically, Apple aren't pushing it in particular. They're just kind of throwing it out in to the market as an option.

Apple aren't pushing it, because it's not Apple anymore. ALAC became open source and Apple predictably pretended it doesn't exist
