4K UHD PC drive testing
« on: October 12, 2017, 04:30:03 am »

Hi Guys

I'm testing a couple of BDXL and 4K drives tomorrow with DeUHD on my surface book which has full 4K capability. (SGX etc)
The drives are Archgon 8102 with LG BU40N drive and a LG BH16NS55 for the main PC.
The external BU40N has full 4K UHD compatibility and the internal BH16NS55 can read BDXL.

Both are listed as compatible with DeUHD and i expect the internal drive will be much faster.

I'll let you know how I go. :)

The Archgon external drive rips @ 2.4MB/s to 2.5MB/s. MC23 seems to rip almost twice as fast as DEHUD (only about 1.2MB/s with DeUHD)

Unfortunately the Surface Book doesn't have an SGX enabled BIOS even though the CPU supports SGX so I cant playback in cyberlink, but the ripped files or direct playback of m2ts files from the UHD drive work fine in MC23.

Lots of dropped frames on the surface book even using the dGPU but my main HTPC plays them fine with MadVR with no dropped frames.

PS: The cyberlink UHD test tool shows this on my surface book so the external drive definitely supports UHD playback of encrypted disks which is pretty cool though.

For me the bottle neck is that DeUHD is single threaded - I get one thread running at 100% = 2.2MB/s on my stock i7-3770K.  Once ripped MC does its job no issues, importing, tagging and playing the UHD BD structures just fine (including switching on/off HDR as needed).

The Martian is ripping at 3.5MB/s using MC23. only 3 hrs to go... ;)

What CPU/Freq are you using!

What CPU/Freq are you using!

Only chewing 35% of CPU and now upto 4MB/s - getting faster as it gets to the outside of the disk.

Its a surface book i7 6600U @ 2.6Ghz

Maybe it's the drive that makes the difference.

I haven't been able to get DeUHD to see a disc on my HTPC using the BH16NS55 yet.. tried a handful of discs. (I have 15) I can navigate the discs in explorer though.

I'm jealous! Mines the BH16NS55 and when ripping I get one core at 100% = 2.2MB/s

Nice one! Scorptec in Sydney @ North Ryde have them in stock. I ordered last night and picked up this morning from the store.

I got DeUHD to see the other drive now. Had to reboot the PC. Ripping John Wick 2 @ 2.4MB/s using 12%CPU on i7 4960X @ 4.6Ghz.

Don't think that CPU you've got there is strong enough for what ever they're asking it to do. Maybe the drive will make a difference. I'll let you know if I get a speed up with this BH16NS55 once it gets through a bit.

PS: Archgon 8102 with LG BU40N drive is now upto 4.7MB/s with 1 hour to go.

LG BH16NS55 is stuck @ 2.4MB/s no change in rip speed
LG BU40N is now upto 4.9MB/s with 30 mins to go. Will probably top out at 5MB/s.

Got the LG BU40N (yup Scorptec as well).  Looks like it is the same speed for me as the BH16NS55.  The good news is I can rip two discs similtaniously now in MC (so at least I get a combined throughput of 4MB/sec)

Do you have any problems seeking in your rips?

For me The Martian fails to parse if I load it by bdmv, and when I load by m2ts the timecodes all out of whack.
I'm running mkvmerge with mkvtoolnix to remux it with the video and audio tracks I want untouched to a MKV file. I found the correct mpls chapter file on the rip to use as a chapter file to recreate the chapters in the remux.  Looks like about 12mins to remux it to a 47GB mkv.

Nope - seeking works without issue (I sometime get a slight pause/macro blocks on the seek but that is it).  In fact playback works perfectly, Chapters, Streams etc.  I am however using a LAV Filters Nightly (overwrote the std LAV MC Folder) in MC.  I have ripped to (and playback from) the UHD BD structure in MC.  Time codes all look correct.  I have 6 UHD BD ripped so far (all that is supported from my 23 discs).  I don't have the Martian on UHD BD but can go and buy it to test.

Thanks - latest nightly LAV fixed it.

Good Stuff.

FYI - I've also seen some corruption on one of my rips (video break up) - Going to re-rip it to check if it is disc or the rip (12 hours worth!)

I'm using the LG WH16NS60 drive. Both of my rips so far were at 4.1 MB/sec when the ripping started. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk took about 5 1/2 to 6 hours and Everest took about 3 1/2 to 4 hours. I'm just going off of how long it took to get to ~50%. I left the house before they were done. I should probably check time stamps of files.

I don't have the Martian on UHD BD but can go and buy it to test.
I have the Martian Extended Edition on UHD BD and it is not supported nor did it rip. I didn't even realize there were two versions released.

I checked my time stamps from Disc 1 of Planet Earth II. It took 3:40 to rip the disc.

Is there an option to purchase the Archgon 8102 in the USA?

Hi All

My LG BH16NS55 cross flashed to BW-16D1HT started generating a ton of read errors this week. Thought it might of been a couple of bad discs at first. Flashed an older 3.01 firmware and it made no difference so it's toast!

Swapped over to my reserve, the Archgon 8102 USB3 with a LG BU40N drive (FW 1.0) and the troublesome disc RIPS are now good. (using makemkv)

Yeah I've got one of my LG (cross flashed to a the Asus FW) also starting to play up....  On some discs it takes ages to read it.  Other times it is OK.

Yep slow to open and read discs was the first issue a couple weeks ago, was getting worse and worse. Generating OS read errors and unrecoverable HW errors now so I think it's toast now.

BU40N had scanned disc and ready to rip in a couple of seconds.

Luckily BH16NS55 is still in ample supply around here, I just recently got a fresh one, and just checked, its still available on sale as well, and even if it comes with new firmware should be cross-flashable.

I've also got a couple of "fresh" drives on my shelf "just in case".
