Good Albums :)
« on: June 14, 2003, 06:36:06 pm »

Hey all :)
I was just going through my collection and I realised I only have like less than 10 albums that have been released so far this year. I'm sure there are way more good albums that have come out so far this year and so I'm just after suggestions of albums released this year that are really good.
10 albums in 6 months is pretty poor going and I want something new :)

All suggestions welcomed.

If you like mellow music check out Kelly Joe Phelps - Slingshot Professionals.  Don't let his name scare you away, is not country music ;D

I wouldn't worry. There's probably only 10 good albums that have been released in the last 6 months anyway. :)

Most of my current faves are from 2002. I'm still listening to and recommending The Donnas - Spend The Night (rock, all girls, KISS meets AC/DC) and Golden Boy with Miss Kittin - Or (electronica with an 80s electro vibe, track 6 "Rippin Kittin" will haunt you).

Avril Lavigne - Let Go is the best album I've heard in 5 years.  Every track is great and I just keep playing it again and again and again.

Brilliant!

on each one there is only one good song so you need to buy 12 cd's to get 1 good CD to rip and re-burn

"Fallen" by Evanescene is a phenomenal album!
Other great albums which have been released recently are:
"Thankful" by Kelly Clarkson (nice selection of songs - a real talent)
"Away From The Sun" - 3 Doors Down (a CD/SACD hybrid)
"This Is Me Then..." by Jennifer Lopez (easily her best album to date)

Although I'm sure this is quite predictable, Radiohead's new "Hail to the Thief" is pretty good. It's all a matter of preference though.

Allman Brothers - Hittin' the Note

I'd have guessed the Allman Brothers were "done", but this new album is one of the best new albums I've heard in quite a long time.

My favorite recent release...

Massive Attack - 100th Window

100th and Mezzanine are their best efforts to date.

Death In Vegas's Scorpio Rising is within a couple years old and is terrific too.

hey :)
Glad to see everyone agree's it's been a pretty bad year for music - bet the RIAA blames it on piracy instead of on lack of actual decent music being released :)

Anyway - I'm into hip-hop, RnB, Rock, some pop thou preferably not too cheesy. Most stuff really although not a big fan of classical and not too into country (is anyone?)

I have to confess though I haven't really bought any new albums for a while.  The last thing I bought was Ash's Greatest Hits off my mate as he had ordered two by mistake...

I got Think Tank by Blur recently although I haven't listened to it yet.

Rilo Kiley - Take-Offs & Landings
Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things
Dandy Warhols - Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia
Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales
Add N To (X) - Add Insult to Injury
Evanescence - Fallen

I'm going to second the JJ (Jack Johnson) recommendation, but go for "Brushfire Fairytales" instead of his newest (2003) release "On and On".  You might want to check these artists out (2002/2003 releases):

Radiohead - "Hail to the Thief"
Jason Mraz - "Waiting For My Rocket To Come"
Sondre Lerche - "Faces Down"
Tosca - "Delhi 9" and "Suzuki in Dub"

When I think of more, I'll post...

IMHO, a solid pop album--one of the best--but suffers from the fundamental limitation of pop, which is that it doesn't stand up to repeat listening. Ten times through and they started sounding juvenile, repetitive, and insipid. Catchy! But juvenile, repetitive, and insipid nonetheless.

My $0.02.

Thirded. Interestingly (considering what I just said about Avril Lavigne), some of these songs are also a little juvenile in that they've got a sort of "teen angst kill myself my parents hate me" vibe. The difference for me is that they're so much more musically interesting than Avril's stuff. Basically, I don't care what the singer is singing about, I'm so happy just grooving to the sound. That's not to say that there aren't some good lyrics on the CD (the single, "Bring Me To Life", for example)!

Here are my current albums, working backwards:

2003

  • Evanescence - Fallen

2002

  • 3 Doors Down - Away From the Sun
  • Matchbox 20 - More Than You Think You Are
  • Wallflowers - Red Letter Days

2001

  • No Doubt - Rock Steady

Honestly, the vast majority of my music collection is from the 90's. I tend to run about three to five years behind on buying music.

Hehehe.. you should check out the Umphrey's McGee 2002-12-31/2003-01-01 concert. They're an American jam band (mostly rock / funk / fusion / jazz) who covered the entire second side to Abbey Road at that show :D amazing stuff.

The show is available in SHN format (this is where in_shn comes into play.. hehehe) on archive.org

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=2206

Amazing stuff, this concert is definitely my favourite album-length (well *cough* 4 hours) piece of music for 2003 so far :)

Other good, good CDs (not necessarily from 2000):

My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult - Sexplosion (religious experience!). Electronic-style drums and synths, but not purely electronic--lots of real instruments and vocals or sampled vocals. Definitely not a "four-to-the-floor" techno sound! Very groove/funk-y. Something like the best porno sound track you ever heard.

My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult - 13 Above the Night (only slightly less wonderful than Sexplosion).

Meat Puppets - Too High To Die. Meat Puppets started as a hardcore punk band, went on to create the only punk/country album ever, then time passed, then came Too High To Die. While you can still hear their punk roots in some of the rhythms, this is NOT a punk album. I'm amazed at the way this album blends punk rhythms and sometimes basslines, the occasional touch of country, traditional rock hooks and licks, and folk/jam-band-style lyrics and instrumental solos (a la Phish or Widespread Panic). There's just so much here. This is my current, "listen to it on continuous repeat all day" album.

Suggestion: go to your local used CD store and check these albums out or download some tracks if you're into that. It's so hard to describe music!

If we're going back to 2002 by far and away the best album released in my opinion was UP by Peter Gabriel. This is probably the best album I've bought in the last 6 or 7 years if not more and is definitely in my top 5 favourite albums of all time.

That's the best thing about music - we all hear things differently.  The most refreshing thing to me about this album was that it does stand up to repeat listening, 20 times 30 times 50 times and I'm not really into plain catchy pop (U2, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Stones etc).

Listen to it Nila and let's know what you think.

Yes really. In fact I have it on as we speak. It took around 10 plays of the album back to back to get into it but once I did it really is superb. I even prefer it to PG[3] which was my previous favourite PG album. It also helps that I saw PG live last month, he was sensational.

Thanks Folks,
I picked up some great new music from this thread   ;D

I particularly likes:
Evanescence - Fallen
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Allman Brothers - Hittin The Note
as well as a few others.

Umphrey's McGee and others I found for download on that site are great too, if you are a 'DeadHead' type and like jam-bands, check em out (Widespread Panic as well)
 http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php?PHPSESSID=9c2c85b57bdc5512f2d1c6c7a34567eb
(I may have gotten this link from thew thread on SHN files  :-/   )

After several listens to "George Harrison - Brainwashed"
I found it hauntingly addictive.

Jack Johnson's Brushfire Fairytales is a good mellow melodic album.

Blue Rodeo's Greatest Hits Volume I is also a very enjoyable CD.  I haven't had a chance to hear their latest yet, Palace of Gold.

I think i prefer them to Phish -- well at this minute ,i may change mind in the next one.......

And ,of cause ,the best rock band SINCE AGES ; White Stripes.

Definately each has it's own; character, style, spirit, etc, and each is worthy in it's own rite.
But what I see in common is the 'jam-band' style of playing.
Some bands perform their music, show after show, holding to the structure and form.  Many achieve an awesome perfection in this, which is amazing. To sound like your album in concert night after night is a feat of skill and talent, rehearsal and practice.
Other bands however hone different skills and use a free-form in each perfomance.  The follow a basic core structure of the song, but that is elastic in some ways allowing for the creative interplays and improvised performance.  This jam-band type of live performance translate into type of playing which I relate to the Grateful Dead and others like them. Every time the song is played, it is intrinsically different.
I enjoy both styles of performance, I recognize the talent, work and skill going into either, but personally I get more out of the jam band style when I either listen or play.

-=-=-=
OF CAUSE !!!!!

I was not saying you are wrong..
I was saying ,that ,unlike some bands  who have or try hard to have a Dead groove , spirit , W.S.P has his own style.

Now , if we start on the Dead ,we may need the all forum only for us..
I did not saw them that much , only during the 72 Europe tour .
But i spent 2 weeks with them during this tour.
Well, better to say i spent 2 weeks with all the Dead circus.. So ,i saw them in France ,Holland and Germany.
And really see what to be STONED means ...
Was TONS of dope around , you cannot imagine.

You have to know that they never tour Europe before and they been reluctant  to do this tour because of not being able to get all the dope they used to have when touring the USA...

In other words , they been on kind of diet in Europe and was allready enought stuff to make thousand freaks happy for 10 years...........

Here ,we have the second DeadHeads communauty after US.

Most of them are ' new -religious ' kind of jesus freak Israel version : Moises freaks.

Many of them live in kind of farming communauty villages- and there is one thing the grow very well...trust me...

One of them has 2000 hours of live shows....
Shows he tapped himself. They been part of the DeadHeads  moving from one concert to another FOR YEARS-.Some of them ,you see they did it .. they look a little bit ..strange.. not really here.

From time to time ,we have at the cinematheque a Dead evening.
Just one or 2 video ,DVd on large screen or a ' best of ' from many concerts.

There is a Dead concert feeling ,people are dress very 'space' ,dancing , singing ,some have ballons ect ect
And every one is stoned to the bones..

Next time ,if you want to find the cinematheque ,no need to ask where it is ...use your nose
