I always import files using "analyze audio," which results in a volume setting that, I presume, is averaged for the album, e.g., 6.54 db avg, implying that individual tracks within the album may be played back at different volumes based on a single setting of the preamp volume control. Is that true?
I have experimented with manually changing the replay gain in albums to a specified value, which, I presume, is not an average but a constant volume adjustment for that album. However, this has met with mixed results, seemingly working at times and not others. I have albums recorded at very low levels (generally older ones) that I cannot get to a desired volume (assuming a constant preamp volume setting) no matter to what value the album's replay gain is set.
What am I missing here? There are a variety of volume metadata fields in use.
