MC23 Music Audio stutter
« on: November 15, 2017, 12:17:08 pm »

I have been using first MC22 and now MC23 for a hifi music playback system.  I dont use any of the video functions just the audio.  I am playing a predominately flac based library that resides on a high end NAS.  I initially had a server and then had my client device (all windows pc's) connect to.  I have been having an issue where I play an album and then maybe it starts to stutter (sometimes its fine.  Other times 1st album plays fine then 2nd stutters.  No ryme or reason).  If I quit the client app and restart problem gone.  I recently converted my client to a client server eliminating one step in my chain.  Same issue.  Quit client app, restart and all fine until it stutter starts again.  I am running the latest version of MC23 as of a couple days ago.  I bought MC for a HQ music client/server system.  This issue has been happening for sometime.  I have swapped client pc (NUC's) and problem continues.  At this point I am at a loss as to the cause.

I have Roon and Kodi on this system too.  This issue does not happen with either one of those apps so its specific to JRiver.  Both stream from the same NAS music source.  Any help would be appreciated as I am about to give up on JRiver and go back to Kodi.

Kinda sounds like a networking issue to me.

It always seems fine until you find out the true reason.

Take a look at the "Weird Problems" thread in my signature.

I did look at the weird problems thread.  Didnt really see anything specific.  Was there a particular thread you wanted me to see?

Seems a lot of audio problems are virus protection related.  I dont use anything.  This is a dedicated music client pc BTW running Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

Also I have run several network tests and I am seeing over 750mbs read speeds from my NAS.  So I really think my network could be the culprit.

I do have the pc connected via usb to an outboard DAC but again doubt thats my issue but who knows.

The stumper is when I relaunch the program it plays fine again.  So it's a software issue of some type.

Windows Defender can cause problems and you may have that running.

Test some local files (not on the NAS).  NAS drives have bugs too.

When it happens next, try power cycling the DAC, not MC.

Sorry Win 7.  Turned Windows defender off.  See how that works.

To eliminate the possibility of it being a network problem, try enabling memory playback.
Options > Audio > Settings > Memory Playback: Load full file (not decoded) into memory

Done.  Thanks.  No idea you could add file to memory! :)

Better to configure it.  There is a Windows Defender topic on our wiki.

Probably not related but I thought I mention it too.  When swapping albums to play back I have also found that the playlist would often not update properly.  This occurs when I would just add another album without clearing the existing playlist.  Now I am using the JRiver IOS app to control my client so I dont know if that is adding anything to the mix.  It seems that there is a fair amount of latency before the app clears the prior playlist with the new one.  In fact just tried it as I was typing this and the app still hasnt updated the playlist to the new album it is playing.  The client shows the proper playlist under the Overview/(current) zone.
