UHD/HDR/3D Setup
tij:
the guy who mention it was working never said what version of Windows 10 he used ... since it is not working for you ... i suspect it was not FCU
FCU and NVIDIA on my machine have several thing that makes it hard to set up
1. 3D only works if NVIDIA control panel (cpl) has 3D setting enabled ... works both in exclusive and windowed D3D11
1. 4k exclusive mode does not work (both D3D9 and D3D11) ... when entering exclusive mode, my screen turns black ... need to terminate MC for black screen to go away
2. 4K D3D9 works in windowed mode (Direct 3D 11 unchecked in MadVR) irrespective of 3D setting ... but you get only 8bit
3. 4K D3D11 in windowed mode works (Direct 3D 11 check in MadVR get 10bit with this one) only if 3D setting is off in NVIDIA cpl ... if 3D setting is on in NVIDIA cpl, MC crashes
you can test above by manually changing MadVR settings and 3D setting in NVIDIA control panel
to do this automatically, it seems logical to have MadVR toggle OS 3D setting on and off when needed ... but here where trouble is for me
MadVR toggles 3D settings in Display Properties of Windows, which should automatically toggle NVIDIA cpl setting ... but depending how you started Windows, it might not
easy to test if your current session is working correctly ... open both NVIDIA cpl and OS Display property ... in NVIDIA cpl go to 3D stereoscopic settings ... now toggle 3D switch in OS Display property ... if NVIDIA cpl does not change accordingly ... then link is not working ... once link is not working, i could not find way to restore link ... need Window restart
NVIDIA has 4 3D resolutions ... 720p23, 720p24,1080p23,1080p24 ... if i start windows in non 3D resolution (aka 4k), 3D link between NVIDIA and Display properties start off broken
hence as descripe before i start Windows in 1080p23 with 3D settings off in NVIDIA and Display propertis ... then do all those steps ... and it sticks
finally turning off my E6 tv causes 3D link to be broken if resolution is non 3d when this happens ... hence i run my Windows in 1080p23 .... have MC to change to 4k when needed, and revert back to 1080p23 once movie is finished
hopefully that explains all the steps i described before to get my set up working (i find if you understand why things not working ... its easier to understand and troubleshoot problems)

this is a great summary and matches my experience.
however instead of starting windows in 1080p23, i boot up in 4k.
when i want to watch a 3D movie, I just enable 3D in the nVidia CPL, then play the movie. when I'm done, I uncheck the 3D setting
majority of my watching is in 2D, so it's a minor inconvenience.

Thanks. Every time I think I'll have time to mess around with the settings I don't.
tij:
Doing step I described earlier ... make 3D setting of NVIDIA to stick with 3D setting of Windows display setting. This allow automatic toggling of 3D setting from MadVR [rendering -> stereo 3D] ... so when 3D movie is played, JRiver sends 3D movie to TV ... then it’s matter of pressing 3D button on TV remote to choose if want to see this in 3D or 2D.
Manual switching is not option for me ... gets my wife confused when I am not around lol

I finally got around to playing with the settings again. Tij, I used the MadVR settings you posted. I only renamed 1 of my 3D movies to MK3D. I did not try all the other steps for automatic switching but restarting in 1080p plays all my movies just fine. I will just leave the computer in UHD and restart when I want 3D. I don't use it enough to screw around with it anymore. Hopefully things get sorted out better.
