The Windows version of MC uses a 3D rendering engine for the image slideshow, the Linux and Id version use a 2D variant. As such, some of the effects didn't really carry over automatically.
Although a simple zoom/pan effect like that doesn't seem impossible to do, it just hasn't been done yet. Don't think processing power is a limiting factor here, its just that the DirectX-based 3D image slideshow is Windows-only and as such had to be rebuild.
I'll put it on the list to investigate, no promises on any timeframe however.
