Double Clicking Files Crashes JRiver [Cause found]
« on: January 20, 2018, 09:10:11 am »

Hi,
I have a problem where if I try to start playing a file by just double clicking it (which would normally start JRiver as that is my default program for playing music files) the app plays maybe 1s of sound, I don't even get to see the interface, and then it stops without even opening JRiver itself. It's almost like it fails to launch the app. However, if I open JRiver manually before putting a song into it or by not starting the song immediately at start-up then JRiver behaves itself as normal. I am using JRiver 23.0.91 but I had this with JRiver 23.0.90 as well. The x64 version does NOT fix the issue, in fact x64 and Soundspectrum WhiteCap plugin don't work at all and make the app crash. Windows Event Viewer tells me this:

Faulting application name: Media Center 23.exe, version: 23.0.91.0, time stamp: 0x5a3056fe

Later Edit. I have attached a JRiver log. Not sure if it has the issue recorded in there though.

Ok. I have narrowed it down to being a problem with the SoundSpectrum WhiteCap plugin which is a visualizer. This is a problem which wasn't there in previous versions before JRiver 23.0.90. I can confirm this issue presents itself in previous 23.8x versions too. I have tried 23.91 and 23.94 and they do not fix the issue. x64 version crashes instantly when trying to select WhiteCap as my visualizer with JRiver already being open even though the most recent version of WhiteCap was made to work with JRiver x64 as it claims in the changelog. This means JRiver recent development must have introduced a change which introduced this bug at JRiver start-up.

Furthermore, I do not understand why opening JRiver before playing a song will not make JRiver crash. This leads me to believe it is stricly a JRiver start-up issue. Please investigate. Or I can help you investigate if you tell me what you need me to do. I can also put you in touch with the SoundSpectrum WhiteCap developers.

Alternatively, where can I download previous JRiver 23.x versions from before 23.0.90? I don't want to have to downgrade to JRiver 22 since I paid for my JRiver 23 license!

This plugin is very important to me!

PS: Found a way to download previous 23.x versions by modifying your download URL string. :/

New Update:
I'd like to specify I had WhiteCap version 6.8 installed. Downgrading to WhiteCap version 6.71, which is the next version down, solves this problem, therefore I can confirm it is a problem at their end and have made them aware of it.

I'd like to mention I have also tried 4 different versions of JRiver to confirm the issue is happening in all of them: 23.0.94, 23.0.91, 23.0.89, 23.0.87; all x32 versions of course.
