Media Center 23 quit unexpectedly error when I play some AIFF files

Some of my .aif files cause MC23 to crash. Other files play just fine. No problems playing .mp3 or .dsf files.
Music files are local, but shared with iTunes. I made sure that iTunes is not running (no dot displayed below the app).
Output is Benchmark DAC3 on USB 2.0.

Also, there are little gaps in the playback - maybe 50ms or so, mostly when I do something on the computer in another app. I have the prebuffer set to 250ms. Any ideas?
